With the current skipper having an incredible pace attack at his disposal, something that no other Indian captain has enjoyed in the past, the team has mounted significant challenges to opponents in all three formats of the game.
With Dhoni helping Virat Kohli from behind the stumps as well, the transition in the role at the helm as been as seamless as it could have been, although the two captains have extremely contrasting styles of leadership.
We have seen Virat Kohli at his expressive best both on and off the field, much unlike his predecessor. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain is very vocal, and frequently shouts instructions to both his bowlers and his fielders.
Virat Kohli also boasts of an active social media presence, a necessity for cricketers in this day and age. The No. 1 ODI batsman in the world is understandably the most-followed Indian sportsperson on social media, especially on Instagram, where he has over 50 million followers.
In this article, we take a look at 5 times the fun side of Virat Kohli made its presence felt on social media.
#5 Virat Kohli trolls Harbhajan Singh
Chennai Super Kings off-spinner Harbhajan Singh uploaded a workout video to his Instagram account in May, captioned "Exercise is a must", and Virat Kohli couldn't resist a jibe at Bhajji's advancing age.
"Well done Paaji. Building kaamp rahi hai magar thodi thodi."
This roughly translates to: "The building is shaking a bit". Kohli and Harbhajan are known for being very thick friends, having won the 2011 World Cup together, so this hilarious interaction came as no surprise.
#4 'You always think it's out': Virat Kohli to Jadeja
Indian left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja posted the above photo on his Instagram handle, captioned with a light-hearted "Dekho bhai, meine nai bola hai review lene ko (I didn’t ask you to take the review)".
To this, Kohli quipped in the comments section:
"Tujhe toh hamesha out hi lagta hai. Review lene ke baad sab doubts aate hain tujhe (You always think it is out. But you start having doubts after asking for the review)."
#3 Virat Kohli pokes fun at KL Rahul
Current Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul was also on the receiving end of a funny Virat Kohli jibe when he posted a photo on Instagram of him drinking coffee. In the caption of the image, the Karnataka batsman stated that the drink is among his favourites.
Virat Kohli, who has captained Rahul at RCB as well, joked in the comments:
"Cup ganda hai. (The cup is dirty)."
#2 Virat Kohli takes a cheeky dig at Pujara
In May, India's Test skipper Virat Kohli posted a photo on Twitter of him taking a one-handed stunner, with teammate Cheteshwar Pujara looking on.
Kohli took a cheeky dig at Pujara, who is not known for being electric on the field, by captioning the photo:
"First session after lockdown be like @cheteshwar1. I hope you will go for the ball pujji!"
Indian pacer Mohammad Shami joined in on the fun, commenting:
"No chance, hahahahahaha!"
#1 Virat Kohli trolls 'TikTok King' Chahal
Yuzvendra Chahal has been very active on social media during the COVID-19 enforced lockdown, with his TikToks in particular becoming very popular.
The leggie, who plays under Virat Kohli both for the Indian team and for RCB, took part in a funny interaction on the 'Just Kidding' with Virat Kohli show, uploaded onto the Indian cricket team's Facebook page.
The spinner was sporting a new haircut, one the Delhi lad couldn't resist poking fun at.
"Who cut your hair?" Virat Kohli asked Chahal, who said: "Bhaiyya (elder brother) my didi (elder sister) and I cut them together."
"Acha. Mujhe laga tere dogs tere peeche path gaye (I thought your dogs went after you)," quipped Kohli.
