ICC introduced the first ever World T20 in 2007 when the nation of South Africa hosted the tournament and the young brigade of MS Dhoni emerged victoriously. Though India could not win the title again, the 2007 victory is still etched in the minds of the Indian fans. India's arch-rivals Pakistan won the second T20 World Cup in 2009 while the English team lifted the trophy in 2010 after conquering Australia in the final.
West Indies won their first ICC trophy in 8 years after beating Sri Lanka in the 2012 WC final while Sri Lanka won the 2014 title in Bangladesh. In the last edition of the T20 World Cup in 2016, Carlos Braithwaite's heroics helped Windies become the first team in the history to win the T20 World Cup twice.
While Windies can be counted as the most successful team in WT20 history, the statistics of win percentages do not say the same story. Here's a list of the 5 teams with the highest win percentage in World T20
#5 West Indies - 58.33%
The two-time champions West Indies are at the fifth spot with a win percentage of 58.33. Having taken part in 31 matches, the Caribbean islanders have won 17 matches in the World T20. They have lost 12 matches in the 6 editions of the tournament while playing 1 tied match where they won the Super Over.
West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the ICC WT20 2012 final and conquered the English side by 4 wickets in 2016 to lift their second WT20 trophy. However, they have lost a WT20 match to Afghanistan also which shows the unpredictability in their game.
#4 South Africa - 60.00%
South Africa have stayed chokers in the biggest event of the T20 format as well. They have never made it to the finals of the event despite playing all the editions. They reached the semi-finals of 2009 and 2014 which is their best performance at the WT20. However, the Proteas have an exceptional win percentage of 60 at the global event.
They have won 18 out of the 30 matches they have played while losing 12 out of them. The South African side failed to make it to the knock-out stage in the only T20 World Cup it hosted in 2007 as they crashed to a heavy loss at the hands of the Indian team in a vital match. Currently ranked at no.6, chances are few that we may see South Africa lifting the WT20 in the near future.
#3 India - 64.06%
India were the first winners of the ICC World Twenty 20 in 2007 but the team has failed to repeat its success at the global event ever since. They could not reach the semi-finals in the 2009, 2010 and 2012 World Cup but finished as runners-up in the 2014 edition.
Hosting the WC in 2016, they were knocked out by West Indies in the semi-finals. While Virat Kohli has been a prominent player for the Indian team at the World Cup, the team has failed to cross the final hurdle.
India has taken part in 33 matches at the ICC World Twenty 20 and has won 20 matches and losing 11. Their first ever WT20 match in 2007 against Scotland was washed away due to rain while their second match ended with India and Pakistan playing a historic bowl out.
#2 Sri Lanka - 64.28%
Sri Lanka has played the most number of ICC World T20 finals (3) showing why they have the best win percentage among the test playing nations. They also hold the record for the highest team score in an innings when they scored 260/6 against Kenya in 2007 WC. Though they failed to progress to the Semi-Finals in 2007, they finished runners-up in 2009 and 2012 before winning the cup in 2014.
The Lankan side failed to lit the 2016 World Cup but still has the best winning percentage of 64.28 for a test playing nation. In the 35 WT20 matches Sri Lanka has played, they have won 22 matches while losing just 12 matches in 6 editions. They also tied a match against New Zealand but won the match in the super over.
#1 Nepal - 66.66%
The Asian minnows, Nepal hold the record for the best winning percentage in the WT20. In the 3 matches the nation played in 2014, they managed to win 2 out of them defeating Afghanistan and Hong Kong but failed to make it to the Super 10s after finishing runners-up to Bangladesh who moved ahead by the virtue of a better net run rate. After destroying the Hong Kong side in their first match, the Nepalese lost their second match to Bangladesh. However, they pulled off a shock victory over Afghanistan as they edged them by 9 runs.
However, Nepal has failed to make it to the World T20 again but Nepalese players like Sandeep Lamichhane have made their mark in the Indian Premier League. The Nepalese cricket fans would be hoping that the team with the best winning percentage makes it to the 20-20 World Cup in Australia.
