Hollywood dominated the box office this weekend as Dwayne Johnson starrer Jumanji 2 lead the show followed by Rani Mukerji starrer Mardaani 2 which grew well while Emraan Hashmi starrer is a big disaster.
The game just got bigger and better as the latest offering from the super star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson opened to a good response in the morning shows across India which was in the range of 20-25%. This is certainly an improvement over the first part which released in 2017. The action drama already collected Rs 1.25 crore on the Thursday paid previews. The earnings went up in evening and night shows, consolidating the first day report with Rs 5.05 crore. There was a good growth on Saturday with Rs 8.35 crore. As per early estimates, the earnings went up on Sunday with Rs 10.55 crore, bringing the total collections to Rs 25.10 crore.
Rani Mukerji scored well with her the her first film of 2019 as Mardaani 2 impressed both the audience and the critics. The crime drama had a low start in the morning shows across India, ranging from 8-10% but reviews were extremely positive as per BookMyShow.com, which helped the earning grow well in the evening and night shows defeating the opening day collections of Mardaani (Rs 3.40 crore) and collect Rs 3.80 crore. The earnings went up by Rs 6.55 crore. As per estimates, the earnings were superb by Rs 9.55 crore, bringing the 3 days total to Rs 19.40 crore.
Though the opening is below expectations as it faced the Hollywood big release, Dwayne “The Rock” starrer Jumanji : The Next Level and Emraan Hashmi and Rishi Kapoor starrer The Body, the footfalls is strong in the multiplexes across urban centers so we are expecting a good hold on Monday. Mardaani 2 is directed by Gopi Puthran who also wrote the original film and is being produced by Aditya Chopra. Mardaani 2 is made on a budget of Rs 30 Crore (Production Cost: 20 Crore & Prints & Advertising Cost: 10 Crore)
Emraan Hashmi scored his second consecutive flop in 2019 after Why Cheat India and 12th consecutive flop of his career (his last hit film was Raaz 3). Also starring Rishi Kapoor in key role, The Body had lowest opening among the three big releases.
Met with dismal reviews, The Body opened to a very poor response below 5%. The collections did not pickup in the evening and the night shows as the audience feedback in BookMyShow.com. The first day collections of the dark thriller stands at Rs 50 lakhs lakhs. There was hardly growth on Saturday with Rs 75 lakhs followed by Rs 90 lakhs on Sunday, bringing the total amount to Rs 2.15 which is extremely poor considering a budget of Rs 30 crore.
