Eight coaches of Mahakoshal Express derailed on the stretch between Kulpahar and Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh.

Eight coaches of Mahakoshal Express derailed on the stretch between Kulpahar and Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh, leaving 22 people injured on Thursday.

Four AC coaches, one sleeper class coach, two general coaches and a luggage coach of the Mahakoshal Express, which runs between Jabalpur and New Delhi, derailed around 2.30 am.

The train derailed moments after it left from the Mohoba station.

The derailment, which took place around 10 kilometres ahead of Mohaba, could have been worse if the train was travelling at a faster speed.

An accident relief train was immediately rushed to the site and the injured were taken to the nearby hospital.

The cause of derailment is yet to ascertained and Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said that an inquiry into the incident has been ordered.

Following the accident, the Jhansi-Banda line has been shut for traffic and several trains travelling through Jhansi have been cancelled. Around half a dozen trains have been redirected through Kanpur.

Railway police and officials are currently at the spot and rescue operations are on. The following helpline numbers have also been issued to disseminate information to the relatives of the passengers.
