Ghaziabad, May 22 (PTI) Police have arrested 11 members of a gang who were allegedly abducting children and selling them to childless couples, a senior police officer said on Saturday.
On April 12, police received a complaint from one Fatima that her 15-day-old son Ramzani was abducted from the Dabur Talab area here, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Iraj Raja said.
A couple had visited Fatima’s house on the pretext of taking one of their rooms on rent. The two served a sedative-laced drink to her due to which she fell unconscious and they took away her child, Raja said quoting the complaint.
Subsequently, a case was registered and police teams were formed to trace the child, he said.
During investigation, it came to the fore that a gang, headed by a woman, was operating in the area that abducted children and sold them to childless couple at huge prices, the SP said.
On Saturday, Fatima’s son was rescued from one Alok Agnihotri, a native of the Madhuban colony of Alam Bagh police station area in Lucknow, he said.
During interrogation, Agnihotri told police that he had “purchased” the child from Asmeet Kaur and Gurmeet Singh of Tilak Nagar, Delhi for her sister after paying Rs 5.5 lakh to them, Raja said.
Raids were carried and 11 members of the gang were arrested, while three others are still at large, the police officer said, adding Rs 5 lakh were recovered from them.
The gang has so far abducted over a dozen children and sold them to childless couples, he said.
An FIR under section 364/328 of the IPC has been registered against the accused and they have been sent to jail, Raja said. PTI Corr AQS AQS
