1,195 new COVID-19 cases, 12 deaths in Puducherry

Puducherry, Apr 30 (PTI) The COVID-19 tally in the Union Territory of Puducherry rose to 58,622 on Friday with the addition of 1,195 fresh cases, while 12 deaths pushed the toll to 805, the health department said.

A total of 6,451 samples were tested in the last 24 hours ending at 10 AM, taking the cumulative number of specimens examined so far to 7.96 lakh, Health and Family Welfare Services Director S Mohan Kumar said in a release.

There were 9,519 active cases after the recovery of 654 patients during this period.

In all, 48,298 people have recovered from the disease so far in the union territory.

Of the total of 12 deceased, five had comorbities, the Director said.

Kumar said 31,907 health care personnel and 18,591 front line workers have been vaccinated so far in the UT.

Meanwhile, a health department release said Lt Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, in an order, warned private testing labs and private medical colleges that stern action would be taken if they collected more than Rs 500 for a RT-PCR test.

It said all government run Primary Health Centres, Indira Gandhi Medical College hospital in neighbouring Kadirkamam and the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital were examining samples free of cost.

The Lt Governor visited the Centrally administered JIPMER and acquainted herself with the work done in treating COVID-19patients, it said.

JIPMER Director Rakesh Agarwal apprised the Lt Governor at a meeting she had with its officials, of the steps taken by the hospital to augment the installed capacity of oxygen production from 11 kilo litres to 20 kilo litres.

The Lt Governor later told media persons that she had asked the JIPMER management to ensure that adequate trained staff, medical officers and also infrastructure is available to manage the COVID-19 situation.

She reiterated her appeal to doctors to ensure that Remdesivir is given only to critically ill COVID-19 patients.
