Young minds not pursuing maths, says PM

Chennai, Dec 26 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday expressed concern that young minds with a natural ability for mathematics were not pursuing the discipline at an advanced level, resulting in a 'decline in the quality of maths teachers at the school and college level'.

In his inaugural speech at a function to mark the 125th birth anniversary of eminent mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, the prime minister said there was a 'general perception that pursuit of maths does not lead to attractive career possibilities'.

'This perception may have been valid some years ago but today there are many new career opportunities available to mathematicians and the teaching profession itself has become much more attractive in recent years,' he said.

He declared 2012 as the National Mathematics Year and Dec 22, the day Ramanujan was born, as Mathematics Day.

'The mathematical community has the duty to find ways and means to address the shortage of top quality mathematicians in the country. It must reach out to the public, especially in the modern context where mathematics has tremendous influence on every kind of human endeavour,' he said.

Stating that mathematics can be regarded as the mother science, Manmohan Singh said natural sciences have had a symbiotic relationship with mathematics.

'Life Sciences did not seem to have much use for mathematics till about a hundred years ago, but lately mathematical interventions have had tremendous impact on biology,' he said.

A noted economist himself, Manmohan Singh said: 'The work of many of the Nobel laureates in Economics is highly mathematical.'

'Aryabhata in the fifth century, followed by Brahmagupta in the next are recorded to be among the all-time great mathematicians. And we taught the world to think of zero as a number and the modern way of representing all numbers with 10 symbols,' the prime minister remarked.

He said Indian mathematics continued to remain in the forefront after Aryabhata almost for a thousand years and cited Madhava to have discovered the essentials of Calculus.

After a long gap, it was during the second decade of 20th century that the country could once again stake claim to producing world class mathematics and that was because of Ramanujan, he said.

Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, also precent at the occasion, said Ramanujan's life shows that it is not necessary to have a regular university degree.

Union Ministers G.K. Vasan, Jayanthi Natarajan, V.Narayanasamy were also present at the function.

This turban joker is not pursuing economics or politics. The administration is the worst ever by any PM in India. What if I prusu the highest level of maths? You will still keep me out in the name of reservation. I have to spend ages on maths and stay in the road without even proper cloths and food. Halo PM Ji your Govt is charging an education cess and what great have you done? If your ministers rule for the people they will try to manage with the least of tax but they are ruling for themselves. You have removed Standard deduction, exemption of Bank interest from tax and what not? Why can't you just stay shut and avoid comedy statements?

Our corrupt politicians have "stolen all the numbers", without living anything to young.
In such a scenario how can one push young minds to show interest in Maths?

Yes offcourse , For this reason only the congress is taking inflation and price to record highs so that each one starts calculating even for every meals. and they are rich because they earn at least Rs. 32 per day. and they should be so much engrossed in this great survival mathematics ( dal roti namak ka chakkar) that they cannot follows simple figures of Rahul bhaiya and Sonia aunti's Billions in swiss banks. and a matter of fact some reservation for muslims also in mathematics.

There is a guaranteed 100 days wages in India which means there is no poor in India. Everyone earns over Rs.32a day. why do political reforms?

Because of lack of ethics in politics and unfaithfulness amongst our political leaders, people, in general, are not interested in the essence of the comments of our political leaders even of the Prime Minister. Whether the Prime Minister was speaking from his heart or he has read out something written and given by his secretary or otherwise, nobody knows. Whatever it may be, Maths. is an important subject and it should be properly taught to the children right from 1st std. onwards. Maths, English and the mother tongue should be given utmost importance in schools from I std. itself. This will help the students to score good marks and get good degrees. Once the students are thorough in these subjects, they can easily get professional degrees and jobs anywhere.

MMS statement is true. Our ancestors were highly cultured and civilized in the 5 century itself; we as their descendants have not achieved anything greater than them. We are in one way moving backwards.

How do we have more Engineers and technology professional today than 15 to 20 years back, Mr.PM ? they were dropped from sky without learning maths ? Non-sense ! this is the problem with leaders who read from scripts prepared by others who are as knowledgeable as themselves !!!

ALAS Mr PM . Why you say young minds are not pursuing Maths. UPA under your leadership has already done enough to educate all young minds the process of counting
Rs one lakh seventy six thousand crores . May be if UPA 3 comes back ( somehow scuttling Strong Lokpal enactment) young minds will get educated to do maths in numbers like 10 lakh crores may be through a 4G Scam.

What PM has said is true. Not only mathematcs but also pure sciences like physics, chemistry and biology are also being ignored. A time may come we will shortage of teachers for these subjects. Can the Govt do something to ensure that a situation will not arise.

DOPT Department of the UPA Govt has decided that Scientists who are having M.Sc as Mathematics can no more be treated as Scientists under FCS to get Promotion. This has degraded the ability of Scientists (Mathematicians) . They are asking their children to pursue Botany, Zoology not Mathematics so that in future their children may be treated as Scientists. DOPt comes under direct control of the Prime Minister. The Hon'ble PM can review the order so that the Mathematicians can be treated at par with other Scientists so that their efficiancy will be increased.
