Yash Chopra's greatest hits

Mumbai, Oct. 23 -- A look at the veteran film-maker's contributions to Bollywood along the years:

Trends he set

First Bollywood multi-starrer - Waqt (1965)

It pioneered the concept of films with multiple stars and the plot of the movie re-introduced the 'lost and reunite' formula in Bollywood, originally featured in the 1943 Ashok Kumar, Mumtaz Shanti starrer Kismat.

Unrest among youth/new-age Indian women - Deewar (1975)

Reflective of the tumultuous politics of the early 1970s, Deewar was among the first few films which portrayed Parveen Babi as the new-age woman, whose character is a liberated working girl - smoking, drinking and sleeping with her lover.

Extra marital affair - Silsila (1981)

This romantic drama was a controversial movie for its time simply because it portrayed an extra-marital affair.

End of violence in Bollywood - Chandni (1989)

It was instrumental in ending the era of violence in Bollywood and bringing back the romance into Hindi films. The film also reaffirmed Sridevi's position as the top female star of the 1980s. It also revived Rishi Kapoor's and Vinod Khanna's

fading careers as heroes.

Age-gap/unconventional love - Lahme (1991)

A cult classic, Lamhe tells the story of age gap romance. Also, the film was criticised for its storyline where the leading hero Anil Kapoor falls in love with the daughter of his late ex-lover - both roles played by Sridevi - who resembles her mother.

Hero with grey shades - Darr (1993)

Shah Rukh Khan won acclaim for his performance as an obsessive lover and a murderer. In SRK's entry in Encyclopaedia Britannica's Encyclopedia of Hindi Cinema, it was stated that SRK "defied the image of the conventional hero in both these films (other being Baazigar, 1993) and created his own version of the revisionist hero."

His masterpieces

Waqt (1965)

Following an earthquake, Lala Kedarnath's three sons have contrasting fates. The separated brothers come together to save each other in a dramatic reunion.

Deewar (1975)

A childhood spent in poverty leads brothers Vijay and Ravi to side with opposite ends of the law - Vijay is a smuggler; Ravi, a cop. Deewar gave us the famous line, 'Mere paas ma hai'

Kabhi Kabhie (1976)

The multi-starrer is a story of two generations of lovers, of unrequited love and old flames eventually reuniting as friends.

Silsila (1981)

Amit's loveless marriage to Shobha brings him back to his old flame, Chandni. Amit and Chandni decide to elope, but circumstances

eventually dissuade them.

Chandni (1989)

Another tale of love and circumstance sees Chandni marrying her boss in spite of loving Rohit. In the end, though, they end up together.

Darr (1993)

K-k-k-kiran and Sunil are in love, but are unaware of Rahul's psychotic love for her. It's a story of love, passion and obsession.

Evergreen numbers he gave us

Ae meri zohra jabeen, Waqt (1965)

Sung by Manna Dey and composed by Ravi, the song has become a cult classic over the years. It was also used in Chopra's production Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).

Kabhi kabhie mere dil mein , Kabhi Kabhie (1976)

Sung by Mukesh and composed by Khayyam, this song features Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan and Raakhee in Kashmir. It epitomises romance to this day.

Rang barse, Silsila (1981)

Sung by Amitabh Bachchan, this cult Holi song's lyrics were by poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Even after three decades, it remains one of the most popular Holi songs.

Jaadu teri nazar, Darr (1993)

Sung by Udit Narayan, it was one of the last few songs

composed by famous music director duo Shiv-Hari. Decades later, Shah Rukh Khan is still associated with the song.

Dil to pagal hai, Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)

Sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan, the song was an instant hit and catapulted music director Uttam Singh into the big league. It was also among veteran lyricist Anand Bakshi's last few big hits.

Main yahan hoon, Veer-Zaara (2004)

Sung by Udit Narayan, the song was picturised on Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta. The film's music was based on old and untouched compositions by the late music composer Madan Mohan, as revised by his son Sanjeev Kohli.

Careers he changed

Amitabh Bachchan

In 1975 with Deewar, Yash Chopra didn't just give Indian cinema its very own 'angry young man', but also gave Amitabh Bachchan super stardom.

Parveen Babi

Cast as the bold girl in Deewar, Yash Chopra showed Parveen Babi wrapped in a blanket with her lover enjoying a post-coital cigarette - a very daring move for that time.

Rakhee

In Doosra Aadmi in 1977, Yash Chopra introduced the concept of a cougar with Rakhee's role in the film, and made the actor a superstar.

Sridevi

Sridevi was already a star, but Yash Chopra's superhit romantic saga Chandni (1989), gave her

stardom like she had never experienced before.

Shah Rukh Khan

He had already done a movie, but with his portrayal of a psychotic lover in Darr in 1993, Shah Rukh the superstar was born.

New Delhi, May 23 -- Fixing is so rife in the domestic T20 league that players on opposing sides in one match were on different bookies' payrolls, a high-level police source said on Wednesday.
