Waugh backs 'galvanized' Aussies to beat 'vulnerable' England in upcoming Ashes series

Melbourne, Feb 7(ANI): Former Australian cricketer Steve Waugh has said his team can win the upcoming Ashes series taking into account England's performance against Pakistan.

"There's chinks in their armour, that's for sure. It's hard to sustain winning at that level for a long time. By the time the Ashes come around I think we will really be in good shape," news.com.au quoted Waugh, as saying.

"The bowlers are looking fantastic and we have plenty of good batsmen. It's just a matter of will they have enough time to gel before the Ashes. I think they will. I think we can win the next Ashes," he added.

Waugh said he is satisfied with the inclusion of new youngsters in the squad, and described the 2011 Ashes' defeat as a crucial moment for the team.

"I think losing the Ashes so badly was the turning point for Australian cricket. With that loss and way they lost, everyone had a good look at the team," he said.

"The talent was there but there was just something that wasn't quite right with the team. They have rectified that, they have the confidence back and there's nothing like winning," he added.

Waugh also said the performance of the bowlers this summer and the influence of bowling coach Craig McDermott has been significant.

"He was a great bowler but underrated. He always pitched the ball up because he could swing it and he's got the guys pitching it up and they are fielding well. Full credit to him, he's done well, but I think it's the combination of a lot of people doing a lot of hard work," he said. (ANI)
