Viraj is champion

lLocal favourite Viraj Madappa secured his second win on the IGU Junior Tour as he emerged victorious in Toyota Eastern India Juniors at the Tollygunge Club, on Friday.

Madappa, who won the Northern India Juniors earlier this year, carded a score of level par-69, which helped him score a winning total of 277.

Shubhankar Sharma of Manesar, who slipped to third position on Thursday, hit one-under-par 68 in the final round to finish second with a total score of 282. Manu Gandas, hailing from DLF Golf and Country Club, finished third with a total score of 287.

"I am very happy that I was very consistent throughout the four days. It is a special feeling to win on the home turf and I will cherish this victory for a long time," Madappa said after the triumph.

In the under-14 age category, Piyush Sangwan registered a comprehensive victory with a 10 shot lead over second placed Tanvir Kahlon of Air Force Golf Course, Delhi, with a total score of 292 while Kahlon carded a total score of 302 over four days.

Udayjit Bhalotia playing on his home course as well carded identical scores with Kahlon but was placed third on accord of back nine count.

Mohun Bagan general secretary Anjan Mitra has passed the buck on to the footballers, complaining that they lack commitment. His comment comes after Bagan's humiliating 0-3 defeat at the hands of Dempo in the I-League, in Margao, on Thursday.

Mitra, meanwhile, has also said that Okolie Odafe too would urge Debashish Dutta, who had announced his decision to quit on Thursday, to continue working as the club finance secretary.

Rishika Sunkara played some scintillating tennis to enter the final of the ITF Women's Tennis Tournament at the BTA Tennis Complex, on Friday. Rishika beat Prarthana Thombare 7-5, 6-1 in an entertaining semi-final clash.

Rishika has been on a roll this tournament and is line for a double crown. In the second doubles semi-final, Rishika and Rutuja Bhosale beat Prarthana Thombare and Nidhi Chilumula 6-3, 6-4. Rishika and Rutuja will take on Kyra Shroff and Aranxta Andrady in the doubles final.

Rohit Malhotra, Avranil Sarkar and Gurbachan Singh notched up relatively easy wins at the State Junior Snooker Championship here, on Friday. Malhotra whippped Kamran Faizi 67-20, 73-38, while Sarkar beat Arafat Mondal 72-27, 58-12.

In the other matches, Aman Jaiswal rallied to beat Rusabh Shah 40 - 50, 56 - 49, 67 - 32, while Animesh Fatehpuria walloped Mohammad Saif Khan 65 -12, 66 - 43.
