Hazaribagh, Jan. 30: An attack on a Saraswati puja immersion procession yesterday triggered protests in Rajdhanwar locality of Giridih today with residents descending on the streets to demand action against the guilty.
Section 144 has been clamped while a large posse of policemen, led by Giridih SP Amol Venukant Homkar and DSP Ramrekha Singh, is camping in the area.
According to sources, an immersion procession taken out by a school in Budhwadih was passing through Lal Bazaar, a minority-dominated locality, when some people suddenly started pelting stones. The Saraswati idol was damaged in the attack and five persons sustained severe injuries.
The news of stone pelting and damage to the idol sparked off resentment among the residents of Rajdhanwar, who blocked Khorimahuwa-Saria Main Road this morning, demanding that the culprits be arrested. The road blockade was finally lifted around 4pm.
Giridih deputy commissioner Diprava Lakra confirmed the incident of stone pelting, adding it was the trigger behind the unrest. "However, normalcy has been restored and policemen deployed in sensitive pockets," he added.
