UK Universities scout for Indian Talent

Three UK universities were in the city last week to firm up research collaboration with their Indian counterparts. The renowned mountaineer and Chancellor of Lancaster University, Sir Christian Bonington, was in the Capital last week to preside over the inaugural graduation ceremony of 111 students of the G. D. Goenka World Institute ( GDGWI).  Lancaster University has a partnership with GDGWI. Majority of the students were awarded postgraduate diplomas in business management and 20 received an M. Sc. in Management.  Speaking at the ceremony, the Chancellor said he was delighted to in the city to celebrate the success of the new graduates.  Education is the foundation of economic success,” Bonington said. “The partnership between GDGWI and Lancaster University has produced academic programmes that prepare students careers in today’s competitive and global economy,” added.

GDGWI and Lancaster University partnership was established 2009. Students at GDGWI follow the Lancaster University curriculum and accorded degrees by the University. As part of the collaboration, faculty from Lancaster is flown in to India to teach the students and university also provides extensive staff training to GDGWI faculty.  addition, students from GDGWI have the option to choose a summer programme at Lancaster University or relocate Lancaster to study the remainder part of their course.  The collaboration is a validation of the degrees from Lancaster; it fosters student- faculty exchange. The partnership is also extended to appointment of faculty and curriculum implementation,” said Vijay Gupta, director, GDGWI. Quality of education seems the cornerstone of the partnership.  Said Professor R. D. McKinlay, Deputy Vice- Chancellor, Lancaster University, “ Lancaster University is known for its world class education and same is replicated here at GDGWI. We work closely and even oversee the appointment of faculty GDGWI.” Speaking about her experiences at GDGWI, Shilka Abraham, who graduated with a post graduate diploma business management and also received the Gopi Ram Goenka Medal for Outstanding Performance in curricular and extra- curricular activities, said, “Not only is the curriculum different, it encourages critical thinking, engages with the real world and prepares you to be a leader.” Even as a global faculty gives you international exposure while being in your own country, the GDGWI at present offers programmes in business, engineering and management.  It is planning to expand to other disciplines like health, law, medicine and architecture.  However, the wait for being granted the university status by the government has put these extension plans on hold.  “ We have applied for state university status, but it is taking time. Therefore, we can expand as much as we want,” said Gupta.  Watch this space for the update. The G. D. Goenka World Institute has applied for state university status. Once it comes through, the institute can expand its offerings.

They just want indian students for funds to pool down in their country. Guys, don't fall for the trap. I did my Master's from a reputed university here. I hoped for a better future. First they said you don't have a work permit and now that I have a full time work permit-there are no jobs. They prefer their nationals first and then they say 'Sorry, though your qualified and experienced....we need someone with unrestricted work permit (i.e. a person who is a british national or with an indefinite stay). So inspite of 6 years of managerial experience with top MNc's and a University Master's degree with distinction.....things don't seem better. So think before you come here.

UK government is running in debt and want foreign investments. So they are targeting Indian students. There is less or no jobs in UK and students after spending 15 to 20 lkh in UK have to return back to their country. If really there is a passion for study do it in India or if you have more money invest in India. I have done MBA in UK and struggling hard to get a Job. I have 5 years of experience in India and companies in UK are not taking into account. They are looking for UK experience. UK government couldn't provide 100% education to their own people and targeting India doesn't make much sense. So please think thousand times before coming to study in UK.

yes..i agreed..this guys are making us fool. I am doing MBA from one of the reputed university..but guys really during placement they are not able to place not even single student on management position. India provides them largest stock of student and this f****** people are not able to provide safety. Indian peoples are on target of racism here..now I came to know Indian education standard is much more high than any other country in woreld.

buddy, for someone studying in UK, your english is riddled with errors in grammar ... aim for english pure, after all you are in the land of queen's english, or move to America, where we've not spoken it in years :) ... little doubt why you may not be able to land a decent job, let alone a management job ... it probably shows in your resume!

They have started to realize that skilled foreigners are important but too much of them is a trouble and hence the very strict visa regulations. As these new regulations will cast a negative impression for foreign students, I am not surprised that some (not all) universities will try best to publicize and draw more foreign funds. If it really makes sense to invest money into education it should be done so. But it has to be weighed against personal motivation. Their equation is really simple - stop the flood of foreign students and open gates for the most talented few. However, the general unemployment is a real big issue. I just look at their unemployment rate and wonder how really they will address that. A large deficit of skilled workers, indeed. There are other great alternative places. Intellect has never been a problem for most of the Indians; the trouble is the lure of a better life style and the disappointment when that does not get fulfilled. A developed foreign land promises a lot but may not give better return as the economy is not very stable. Doing a good homework is essential and just not repeat what has been done in the past. It is not that difficult to outwit them.

Guyz please do not come here, therez nothing we are like scape goats. No standard of education, No work after your education, we are like tertiary parties i.e brits, EU citizens, brit asians and chinese then we come into consideration to get an employment. I did my masters in 2009, never worked with satisfaction and doing low level job which is not related to my skills and knowledge. More to express but in a single word "do not get into trouble". Suggestion to all my Indian friends "do not waste ur money and time".

I agree too, UK is going down big time, and we Indians are bringing billions into this country and still we get treated like a crap. If u have loads of money invest in India and do something fruitful, coz at the end of day our country is our motherland.

      Hi Guys,

This is Amarjeet from Mumbai and I am working in Cardiff, UK at the moment. I am from India and came here to do MBA degree like many of our Indian friends. Shortly after my studies, I got the opportunity to work as an intern at Welsh Assembly govt and shortly after that I got a job in my Uni- Which is at Cardiff Met !! I was a fresher and worked all my way to get a job. Believe me guys, you got to be bit positive - UK is not all that bad - I am a living example of a successful Indian student here. Let me be very honest friends , I had a student visa too but i kept applying for jobs until I got one. (it wasn’t that easy BUT it wasn’t that difficult too - it was challenging)

Let me tell you straight, I have many friends from India they are working in good UK companies like Barclays, Lloyds, HSBC, Deolitte etc. Yes, they are all Indians (from Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi etc) with student visas and they are all hard working.

Friends, competition is everywhere - be it India or UK. What matters is how you take it and move forward. I couldn’t make it to IIMs and could only scored 92 percentile so I thought why to waste more time trying for IIMs rather I invested a bit and got a UK Merit (first class) degree.

Secondly, UK is very safe especially Cardiff- it is a very friendly place. I understand that a sad incident recently happened with an Indian student (i really felt sorry for him and his family) but I think it was a one of situation and could have happened any where. Guys, have you noticed how many foreign visitors die in India every year! You will be surprised!!

Anyways, I wish that a common sense prevails and our Indian friends coming here to study are mature enough to make a good decision.

      Hi, I am Ravinder Kler
I absolutely agree and share the truth and pain of all the people who have commented so far and will many more be commenting later on. In the name of higher education leading to higher job opportunity, the UK govt. infact established a billion/ trillion pounds every year industry for which they are trapping innocent, immature, inexperienced and unable to calculate the impact - students from asia especially India to churn money into their money spining education industry with nil chances of seeking them a job opportunity anywhere in UK/EU or any developed country in the world.
Special Note - Hey, any aspirant of studying in UK - please collect data of total no of students of your discipline who studied in last 3-5years in UK then what and how much UK education helped in their job career till now. Findout reality with reliability and then decide your fate.
