UFO claims in NASA footage foiled by laws of physics

London, Jan 20 (ANI): Scientists have debunked a mysterious triangular "UFO" footage captured by a NASA telescope, which found its way to YouTube.

Once again, alien conspiracy theorists have attempted to use publicly available NASA images to prove that the space agency must be engaging in an elaborate UFO cover-up. And, once again, they've been foiled by the laws of physics.

This time, they had called attention to peculiar new footage captured by a telescope onboard NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft - one of a pair of probes parked on either side of the sun which, together, provide a 360-degree view of the inner solar system.

The footage shows Venus, Earth and, on the opposite side of the field-of-view, a mysterious triangular object headed our way.

"Comparing it for size to the planetary objects that are seen in this telescope, if my calculations are correct, that thing is enormous," Discovery News quoted YouTube user 'BeePeeOilDisaster' in his video commentary on the footage, which was captured December 27-29.

Talk of a cover-up quickly followed when, a few days later, NASA scientists updated the STEREO website to display newer images.

The team of scientists who work with data from the probes decided to address the claim directly and, in a post on the STEREO website, they offered up an explanation of the triangular feature in the December footage.

The researchers say its no more than a trick of the light.

"The answer lies on the exact opposite side of the image... At the same time as this strange-looking feature starts being visible, the very bright planet Venus enters the [telescopic camera's] field-of-view from the lower left," the scientists wrote in their post.

They note that Venus and the triangle, opposite each other across the middle of the camera plane, stay in step as they move.

"This is not a coincidence. The strange looking geometrical 'object' is actually an internal reflection of the planet Venus within the telescope optics. This effect has been seen many times before," the researchers said.

In this optical effect, incoming light reflects back and forth off lenses and mirrors inside the telescope; the shape of artifacts produced by this scattered light - usually triangles and circles of various sizes - depends on the relative orientations of those lenses and mirrors.

Another example of internal reflection, this time of light from planet Earth, can be seen in a STEREO-B image from May 2007. More examples of internal reflection and other optical and data processing artifacts are displayed on the scientists' "Image Artifacts" Web page, along with explanations of the various effects.(ANI)

Triangilar UFO footage captured by NASA observed in YOU Tube. But the Real thing must be revealed by NASA only.

I have seen ufos (each time a different type) on 4 different occasion and my son, on one occasion took several cell phone pictures of one. In all cases I was with at least 4 other witnesses so it is comforting somewhat that I know I was not the only one seeing what I saw. The closest enounter was at my old house in West Islip on long Island by rte 231. We lived along a backwater area full of trees that separated us from 231. I saw (and my wife and kids) a black boomerang shaped craft move northward silently in a very controlled straight line just above the tree tops (actually caressing the tree tops on the eastern side of 231). It then stopped about 50 feet from our house and hovered motionless for about a minute. I have 20 20 vision, and could see that there were fairly sharp angled surfaces that appeared to have a rough surface similar to velcro. It was about 40 or 50 feet across (wingspan) and about only 4 feet in height. There were no motors and no jets. I told my wife to run in and get the video camera and as she did it moved straight upward several thousand feet in a minute or two. We got the video on and captured about 30 seconds of video before the battery died, but by then it was thousands of feet up and it looks like a little blurry black boomerang in the sky (and a jet liner files past it). It flexed one of its wings while the other remained stationary. One other was a metallic multifaceted edged (like an octogon) ufo I saw chasing a fighter jet in western pennsylvania. I was with my backpacking class an and it stopped about 5000 ft above us, for a minute, then slid across the sky to again get on the tail of the jet. The other sighting was a set of 4 glowing plates (30 feet diameter or slightly larger) flying in formation while doing yo yo tricks in the air off of Virginia beach back in 1962 or 3. They hovered silently rose and fell to just above the water and would rise very quickly to 300 feet or so. All this was in front of hundreds of people who just stared at this wonder (on the beach just outside the Sea Horse Inn at about 7:30 or later because it was summertime and night had just fallen). Note we were only about 3 miles from a major Navy Base. My son, and daughter saw a black triangle, 30 or so ft across, with 2 bluish lights, hovering above them as they sat on the deck behind our house after dark, in August 2007 (Melville Long Island). My son took 5 pictures with his cell phone as it hovered then rose vertically out of sight. All I know is these things are architected objects, which for all intents and purpses seem to defy gravity and move without our standard means of propulsion. Are they ours or from another planet? I have a cousin who, in her 40s, described to my aunt seeing a group of Greys in the woods behind her house in Ohio back probably 20 years ago, and that prompted her to move to san Diego. She never told anyone else for fear of seeming insane, and I only know about this because her mother told my mother. I think it is possible we have visitors.
