Treasure hunter finds $3bn-worth platinum in shipwreck

Moscow, Feb 2 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A US treasure hunter has announced a record find of Soviet platinum in a sunken World War II era shipwreck, BBC reported Thursday.

The wreck - of a British merchant vessel - is located 80 km off the US Atlantic coast in waters 213 metres deep, Greg Brooks of Sub Sea Research said.

Brooks said he had discovered the SS Port Nicholson, sunk in 1942 by a German torpedo, four years previously but delayed the announcement while he negotiated salvage rights.

The platinum bars, now estimated to be worth $3 billion, were payment from the Soviet Union to the US for war supplies.

But Anthony Shusta, an attorney for the British government, said he doubted the ship was carrying platinum, but that Britain may make a claim on the ship's contents when the salvage attempt begins.

An operation to recover the treasure will start later this month.

"I'm going to get it, one way or another, even if I have to lift the ship out of the water," BBC quoted Brooks as saying.

The Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences said they were not aware of the hoard but confirmed the Soviet government often used precious metals and minerals as payment during WWII.

In 1981, a British treasure hunter discovered a wreck of the British warship HMS Edinburgh laden with Soviet gold in the Arctic Ocean. The gold - which became known as Stalin's gold - was due to be paid to the US for the arms it supplied.

Yeah let the Gov. get there paws on it, belongs to the guy that found it, stay out of it Gov.

The Government should only be allowed to claim the price of the platinum at the 1942 value, anything over that amount at today's value should go to whomever found it.

What happened to all the lost Indian treasures? Being a treasure hunter myself am looking at the malacca straits for the past 5-6 years for lost ships of the 12-13th century which were shipping spices and also gold. Any help from govt is not coming asking for exclusive rights if i get the find. So this government of India sucks.

hi So how do you hunt for these treasures do you have any equipment and do it through an organization or just as a scuba diving enthusiast do it out on your own. And with regards to your govt help for exclusive rights it might be difficult in india but i think you can look at odyssey and how they operate they are in the same domaina nd water as you and also are you looking at them beyond 10 Nautical miles in that case i feel the find comes out in international waters hence in international courts wouldnt much worry then as you might expect a just settlement in case you find any claimants (which i doubt as the ships you are talking here did not belong to any govt but long lost dynasties).

What has happened to $500 billion loot of Indian people found out in swiss banks. When are we going to get back this loot ?. I feel that we should employ some body to procure this loot, which is there like platinum for the last so many years.

According to Indians everything belongs to them. A strange way of thinking!

Since it's loot, why are you expecting it back?

What does this story have to do with India? Nothing!
This treasure was payment from Russia to the United States in WWII. What did India have to do with WWII?
The only nation to have claim on this "treasure" should be the intended recipient, the United States, since it never received the payment and Britain's only claim would be for the cost of their ship and services.

India should concentrate on cleaning up their own country first. It's heavily polluted........by Indians!
Why is it India was mentioned about this? India had nothing to do with this.

Points that should be considered here
1 - the cargo has been forgone since 1942 as it sunk... The Gov't since considered it as collateral damage or war loss.
2 - Ever since after the war, there was no state led efforts to find the cargo.
3 - It was a personal thing for the diver to look for it using his personal resources.

Following these premises, I think that the dude who discovered this should be the sole beneficiary of this find. If at all, the taxes for this, if any, would be the only thing that the gov't should get.

Looks like this was the payment for the Lend-Lease Agreement. Could explain why the Red Air Force operated P-40s P-39s and some Hawker Hurricanes.
