Tata parks a green homage to founder

Founder's Day celebrations in Jamshedpur on March 3 will give the city's posh Bistupur a green lung.

Cascading water, landscaped gardens and a variety of ornamental and flowering plants will provide a welcome relief from the jangle of traffic on Bistupur Main Road near the roundabout on 1.5 acres behind JN Tata's statute.

The park will no doubt please Tata Sons chairman Ratan N. Tata. Every year on Founder's Day, he chooses this venue to flag off colourful floats prepared by schools, social outfits and other organisations.

Jusco, the wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Steel, has begun construction work of the park on a war footing to meet the March 3 deadline.

"We decided to convert the Bistupur food plaza area into this park. The plot was lying vacant for quite some time ever since the plaza shut down. It is prime land and when the park is complete, it will greatly enhance the beauty of this area," said Jusco spokesperson Rajesh Rajan.

New Delhi-based Doora Associates have been assigned the job of designing the park, while Jusco's horticulture services wing will set up water cascades as well as plant various species, landscape the gardens and so on.

"Falling water cascades will be the showpiece of this park. Landscaping will be a visual delight. Ornamental plants and flowers will be in sync with the theme," said B.N. Mohanty, head of Jusco's horticulture services.

But if you have plans of sitting down for a cosy chat with family or a special someone, be prepared for a let-down.

"Whenever seating arrangements are made in any park, people litter the area with soft drink cans, polythene packets and food. We will not install any seats. Come here, enjoy the beauty and leave," said an official supervising the project.

Besides this park, tributes lined up for Tata Group founder JN Tata's birth anniversary include new and improved fountains at Jubilee Park, colourful pageantry and various functions.
