Guwahati, Feb. 1: About 450 students and officials will participate in the four-day 57th National School Games under-17 taekwondo championship to be held at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium here from tomorrow.
"Participants include 178 boys and 175 girls from 21 units of the School Games Federation of India, who have already confirmed participation in the meet," said Anjan Sarma, joint director of sports.
Altogether, 20 events, 10 each for boys and girls, will be held. Sarma said the 21 units out of a total of 39 across the country are Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Indian Public Schools' Conference, Jharkhand, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra, Manipur, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Vidya Bharati, Uttarakhand and host state Assam.
"The Assam team, comprising 10 boys and nine girls, were conditioned at the Special Area Games centre of the SAI in Kokrajhar for the last one month," said Pradip Hazarika, deputy director of sports. Sarma said the teams had already started arriving here since January 30 and were being accommodated in the Sarusajai Sports Complex.
"The boys are put up at the Zakir Hussain Aquatic Complex and the girls at the Sports Hostel on the same campus. The team officials will stay at the Lawn Bowls Complex in Sarusajai Sports Complex and the technical officials at the Sports Authority of India guesthouse in the Games Village," the official said.
Elaborating on the meet, sports minister Ajit Singh, who is the organising committee chairman, said sports ministry secretary Sindhushree Khullar and joint secretary Omkar Kedia will be present during the inaugural ceremony tomorrow.
Harping on the successful hosting of the 33rd National Games and the recent state-level PYKKA meet, the minister hoped the Rs 9-lakh budget meet from tomorrow would also help revolutionise sports in the state.
