Kolkata, Jan 12 (ANI): The 150th birth anniversary of renowned social reformer Swami Vivekananda was observed on Thursday here with rallies and cultural programmes.
A colourful procession was taken out on the city streets, which saw the participation of huge crowd of Vivekananda followers.
Eminent painter, Jogen Chowdhury, said the youth should connect to the teachings of Vivekananda, which would play a great role in the development of the country.
"Vivekananda's message to the people is significant and important, particularly the younger generations should study his books, his views, his comments about life, the people and the country," said Chowdhury.
Artistes dressed as Vivekananda, Maharani Laxmi Bai and Mother Teresa also participated in the procession.
West Bengal Sports Minister, Madan Mitra, said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had directed to observe the day in a befitting manner.
"A lot of people are there, a number of ministers are there, lot of celebrities are there and we will go up to Rabindra Sadan, which is eight kilometres away from this place, on foot. Throughout the state our chief minister has directed to observe this day in a befitting manner," said Mitra.
The Ramakrishna Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda, is planning a series of programmes to commemorate the occasion, including a number of cultural programmes, essay writing competitions for college students and multimedia presentations on Swami Vivekananda's message to the youth.
Vivekananda was born on January 12th, 1863 and this day is celebrated across India as National Youth Day, with an aim to show the right direction to the youth of the country. (ANI)
