New Delhi, Nov. 13 (ANI): Principal of Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath, on Tuesday said that the students were eagerly anticipating the arrival of Aung San Suu Kyi, who studied in the prestigious institution in the 1960s.
Gopinath, however, said the college is yet to get a final confirmation about her visit.
"We look forward to her visit, we are still to get final confirmation, but it is a dream that we have had for several years and because she stands as an icon, not just for all womanhood but also for people who believe in democracy and justice and for social responsibility," she said.
Pooja Bhatiya, a student at LSR, said that Suu Kyi's achievements are an inspiration to today's students.
"Given the political circumstances in her country and the kind of leadership that she has shown is really commendable and also the choice that she has made in choosing her country first over her family is also pretty commendable," she said.
Another LSR student Meenal said leaders like Aung San Suu Kyi is an inspiration for the people.
"I think such leaders are not only required, but people should be inspired by Aung San Suu Kyi and should actually follow her because I personally would love to emulate such a lady, who has such a stature and a woman of substance," said Meenal.
"And I am really happy that when she will be coming to LSR, I will be sharing the same space with this great leader," she added.
The Opposition leader of Myanmar and Member of Parliament Aung San Suu Kyi is making her first visit to India since she was released from nearly 15 years under house arrest.
San Suu Kyi, who will be meeting Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, will also deliver the Nehru Memorial Lecture on the occasion of the birth Anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on November 14.
She is also scheduled to call on Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.
Aung San Suu Kyi spent several years in India during her early days when her mother Daw Khin Yi was Ambassador to India. She also spent some time as a Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla in 1987. (ANI)
