    Students clinch astronomical packages

Patna, Feb. 2: Recession and market fluctuations are not a cause of worry for the final-year students of Indian Institute of Technology, Patna. Around 90 per cent of them have already bagged lucrative job offers from renowned companies.

Sources said 75 out of the 80 students of the first batch have got job offers till now. The placement process will continue for a-month-and-a-half more.

Microsoft India Development Centre (IDC) has offered employment to three techies at an annual package of Rs 16.5 lakh each. This is the highest salary on offer.

Anil Kumar Bhowmick, director, IIT-Patna, said: "Till now, around 90 per cent students have been placed. The percentage will go up in the coming months."

Other companies that have offered high-end jobs to the students include Bank Bazaar, online shopping portal Flipkart, Hero MotoCorp, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Technologies and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). (See graphics)

Bhowmick said: "It is a big achievement for us!"

Students who will benefit from this downpour of jobs are naturally very happy.

Nishant Kumar, a final-year computer science student, told The Telegraph: "It is great for us to get a job offer from Microsoft IDC at this time, when there is a recession in the market and companies are laying off their employees."

Apart from private companies, students are also receiving job offers from government enterprises like Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited ' a joint venture of DRDO and Federal State Unitary Enterprise, Russia ' has also offered to employ techies.

The DRDO has decided to make job offers to nine students from the institute ' three from computer science, four from electrical and two students from mechanical engineering.

Suresh Prasad, in-charge, training and placement cell, IIT-Patna, said: "DRDO has selected students according to its requirements."

He added that the three engineering courses taught at IIT-Patna are inter-disciplinary.

"IT students have been offered employment by core sector industries and vice-versa, depending on the requirement of the companies," said Prasad.

For instance, Headstrong, an IT-sector company, has offered jobs to students from all three departments. Four computer science students and two each from mechanical and electrical departments have bagged placement offers from Headstrong.

The director claimed that few years ago, students from core sectors like electrical and mechanical often took jobs in the IT sector because of the astronomical pay packages but now this trend has changed.

Bhowmick said: "Students now prefer core companies that offer positions and job profiles matching their study area. The core companies also offer attractive pay packages that are no less than IT sector companies. For instance, BPCL is offering a pay package of Rs 9.8 lakh to students."
