    State woos travel buffs

Ranchi, Dec. 21: Avian guests may have their doubts of flying in to Jharkhand, but the tourism department is spreading its wings to lure humans to the state.

A steady rise in the number of visitors and a warm response to the Jharkhand pavilion at the India International Trade Fair (IITF) in New Delhi last month has encouraged state tourism officials to look for similar image-building drives.

"At present, we are taking part at the India International Mega Trade Fair in Calcutta that flagged off on December 15 and will continue till Christmas. We are happy to know that we are getting a good response," said Sunil Kumar Sinha, deputy secretary of the state tourism department.

He pointed out that footfall was huge in Bengal, which sent about 76 per cent of the tourists to Jharkhand.

As per figures available with the tourism department, inflow increased 10 times in 2010 by comparison to 2005, as the state attracted a footfall of 2.4 crore domestic travellers and 17,000 foreigners.

To bring the state's natural advantages into the limelight, the department has decided to take part in two more trade fairs ' India Travel Mart and Travel and Tourism Fair.

The India Travel Mart will be a three-day event in Goa from December 27 to 29. Travel and Tourism Fair, on the other hand, will be hosted in Chennai from January 6 to 8.

"Our aim is to highlight the tourist destinations of Jharkhand to draw people not only from all corners of the country but from across the globe," said Sinha.

"People have responded well to Jharkhand at the fair in New Delhi. We are expecting to win hearts in Goa and Chennai," he added.

He added that the marketing drive would be persuasive with well-produced brochures, pamphlets and CDs.

"Our advertisement materials are filled with information about tourist spots, yet stylishly designed. We are actively using them at all trade fairs in various cities," Sinha added.
