New Delhi, June 3 (ANI): Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi will preside over a significant and crucial meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) that is expected to take stock of the grim economic situation and the political challenges confronting the nation.
It is expected that the CWC will evolve a strategy to bolster the party-led UPA government.
The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, top ministers and key party leaders will be attending the meeting, which could see them taking effective steps to provide relief to common man.
Monday's meeting will be taking place a day after veteran social activist Anna Hazare and yoga guru Baba Ramdev took part in a day-long anti-graft sit-down fast.
Issues such as the petrol hike, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's demand for a bailout, the electoral debacles in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Goa and the sticky political situation for the party in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka could feature in the CWC meeting.
The CWC may also take a call on the recommendations of the high-level committee chaired by Defence Minster A K Antony, which has submitted its report to Gandhi.
Pradesh Congress Committee presidents and Congress Legislative Party leaders, including party chief ministers have also been invited for the deliberations.
The CWC meeting takes place within a fortnight of the BJP's national executive in Mumbai in which the opposition party has given indications of its keenness to broaden the ambit of the NDA and has virtually extended an invitation to UPA ally Trinamool Congress to come back to the NDA fold.
The first two meetings of the CWC in March and May were only condolence meetings to pay homage to the veteran Congressman and former Union minister and governor Arjun Singh in March and in May to condole the untimely demise of the then Arunachal chief minister Dorje Khandu in an air crash. (ANI)
