    Shot through door planks

Kharagpur, Jan. 23: Robbers inserted a crowbar through the joint of a planks door and shot dead a 22-year-old boy through the gap after he and his father informed a jeweller in the Kharagpur neighbourhood over the phone that his shop was being broken into.

Police said grocer Gourhari Shau, 60, woke up when he heard a noise early today. From his first-floor veranda, he saw six robbers trying to break the shutter locks of the jewellery shop on the opposite side of the road.

Shau's elder son Bijoy said: "Father asked my younger brother Sanjay to call up the jeweller. The robbers must have noticed Sanjay making the phone call as he and my father returned to the room. They came to our rented apartment and tried to break open the door bolt by inserting a crowbar through the joint."

Shau and his sons stood with their backs to the door to prevent the robbers from breaking it open. As a portion of the crowbar cut through the gap between the planks, Sanjay caught it and tried to pull it out of the hands of the robber.

"Then another robber put the nozzle of his gun through the gap and shot Sanjay in the face. He died on the spot," Bijoy said.

The robbers fled after the murder.
