London, Oct 13(ANI): Rugby league player Paul Wood has been dubbed as the hardest athlete ever after he continued playing even after losing a testicle due to a freak injury during last Saturday's Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford.
Three hours after the match, Wood was in an operating theatre in Salford's Hope Hospital having the damaged right testicle removed.
Unfazed by most men's worst nightmare, Wood told his wife to stay at the aftermatch party inside the stadium and not worry about him.
"I was just running with the ball and collided with the Leeds lad. There was an accidental slight knee raise and it was over in a flash. Straight away I was in pain but I said, 'Leave me on and I'll run it off'," the Daily Mirror quoted Wood, as saying.
"I just kept saying, 'I'm OK, I'm OK' and luckily there was a few breaks in play so I took some water on, got the magic sponge on there and tried to sort myself out. When I went off I put some ice straight down my pants and I thought, 'There's a lot of swelling here'," he added.
"After the game it was the size of a tennis ball and the doctors looked at me, looked at each other and said, 'We need to get you to hospital'. It honestly didn't bother me. Once the surgeon said it's not going to -jeopardise having more kids in the future or anything else I just wanted to be pain free," he said.
Wood added: "I'm just trying to carry on as normal. I'm not going to sit in my house sulking. I've got to live up to this name of being the toughest athlete ever that I've been given."
"It's ridiculous really. All rugby players get injured and play with injuries so I'm nothing special. I don't see it that way. There's people in worst situations than me. I am on painkillers but I don't like taking them so I'm managing the pain myself," he said. (ANI)
