Ring in New Year with folk and rock

A three-day cultural fest kicked off to the beats of the mandar on Friday at the reservoir park in Kanke, Ranchi, entertaining New Year revellers with folk and rock music, dances and finger-licking snacks.

The programme hosted by Adivasi Development Network, which is managing the Sharad Utsav New Year Jatra on behalf of state tourism department, attempts to give a unique folksy flavour to the New Year.

This is the first time the state tourism department has come up with a function on the occasion of New Year for the city's revellers.

So, instead of DJs rocking the turntable with Bollywood remixes, noted folk artiste Mukund Nayak mesmerised the audience with pulsating beats of traditional musical instruments. Creating a rare fusion, rock bands joined them with their guitars and drums. Nagpuri dance and songs were performed by local artistes, an added bonus for the crowd.

"The three-day fest will see lot of fun and entertainment for Ranchiiites. Along with this, our aim is to promote regional culture among youths in the city," said Dulal Hansdah, a third-year engineering student at BIT-Mesra, who is also associated with Adivasi Development Network.

The venue also perked up spirits, situated on the banks of Kanke dam. A huge stage has been set up for the programmes. Till January 1, 2012, different cultural events will begin at 1pm and go on till 9pm. Ethnic food stalls have been set up so that the crowds can grab a bite while watching a performance. If creativity strikes budding artists, they can paint on the canvas available on the grounds.

On New Year's Eve, the Sharad Utsav has in store a performance by Ajay Malkani's troupe and an ethnic fashion show.

"Malkani along with artistes from Marwari College will present a show of masks on Saturday. Internationally acclaimed artist Nandlal Nayak will give a performance," said Hansdah.

Rock bands like Sparsh, Gravity and Conflicting Resonance will also take the stage.
