Return of the Diva

True to its nature, the Indian Hindi film industry had its own share of drama, death, fights, sleaze, controversy, comebacks, corruption, commercial success and failure, and nudity, in 2012. The same ingredients that some of the Bollywood films employ to tease, titillate, torture or teach its committed audiences. Here are some of the most interesting Bollywood events from the year 2012:

This is probably the first time in the history of Bollywood that a 49-year-old mainstream actress makes a comeback in a starring role after 15 years. Sridevi’s role in ‘English Vinglish’ won over her fans and critics alike all over again. The actress has always been a sort of enigma to the media as well as her fans since she never made an effort to stay in the limelight after her last film ‘Judaai’ 15 years ago.

For her comeback, she rightly chose not to compete with PYTs and chose to do something different. In the film, Sridevi plays a middle-class Marathi homemaker, conscious of her self-complex of not knowing spoken English in a world that laughs at her ignorance of the language, and yet driven by the steely resolve to prove a point in her own quiet way. What’s more people identified with her plight and helped to make her comeback a roaring success.
