Alipurduar, Feb. 6: A residential primary school will be set up in Buxa hill for children of five villages who now trek for more than three hours to reach the nearest educational institute.
Officials said Rs 44 lakh has been sanctioned by the backward classes welfare department and a plot has been selected at Adma in Buxa west, 40km from here, for the school that will have classes from I to V.
Although Buxa west division has five villages with a population of around 5,000, it does not have a school yet. One has to trek for more than three hours to reach the nearest primary school at Chunabhatti.
According to a recent survey conducted by the block administration, around 150 children below 10 years in the west division don't go to school because of the distance.
Thendrup Sherpa, the block development officer of Kalchini, said: "It is impossible for children to travel for almost four hours everyday to Chunabhatti. We hope that once the school comes up at Adma, a lot of children from Buxa west division will take admission."
He said the school will initially accommodate 50 boys and 50 girls.
"The capacity can be increased later. The education, lodging and food will be free of cost and children between five and 12 years will be taken in. The funds have been sanctioned and construction work will start soon. We will recruit the teachers from the local villages so that they attend school regularly. We will start the classes as soon as possible," he said.
