Rent-a-womb: India becoming surrogate pregnancy hub

New Delhi, Feb 15 (IANS) Surrogate pregnancy, an assisted reproductive technique (ART) in which a woman carries in her womb the baby of another woman, has seen a spurt in India. Due to the healthier lifestyles of to-be mothers and lower costs compared to the West, the country could become a global hub in the field, gynaecology experts say.

'The reason why surrogate pregnancy is rising is mainly because of the low-cost factor, and the preferably healthy lifestyle of Indian women, much needed during pregnancy,' Shivani Sachdev Gour, fertility expert and gynaecologist, told IANS.

'Women here are less exposed to a lifestyle with drugs, alcohol and smoking, which has a positive impact on the health of the baby as well as the mother. Also surrogacy laws in India are much lenient as compared to other countries,' added Gour.

She says she gets around 25 patients every month from countries like Britain, the US, and countries in the Middle East at the Surrogacy Centre of India Healthcare, a private hospital she runs in south Delhi.

While the cost of treatment and expenses involved in surrogate pregnancy vary between Rs.50,000 and Rs.100,000 ($1,000 and $2,000) in India, the cost in other countries like the US and Britain is nearly five times that in India, said Gour.

'Surrogacy is advised in cases of malformed uterus, or when pregnancy is life-threatening. But the reasons are slowly expanding in our country,' said Alka Kriplani, professor at the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

According to experts, the success rate of surrogate pregnancy at centres in India is higher than in other countries.

'In over 60 percent of cases, the prospective mother carries back a healthy baby, while the miscarriage rate is less than 15 percent,' said Gour.

Experts also emphasise on the need for stringent surrogacy norms at ART centres.

'A proper screening process is required. Apart from the carrier's age, which should be between 21 and 35 years, their medical, personal and family history should also be gauged to decipher her mental and physical well-being,' explained Gour.

After the preliminary screening of the surrogate, a well detailed contract as per Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) guidelines is made between the surrogate and the couples in question. The process involves all the three main parties - the parent, child and the surrogate.

Prospective parents - mostly coming to India from the US, Britain and Israel - have discovered that the surrogacy laws of other countries often come in the way of parents returning home with their children, experts said.

'Surrogacy is rising and it is important to keep an eye on the use of the technique. It can be misused also as poor women are lured into becoming surrogate mothers because of the money involved,' said Kriplani.

The draft Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) Regulation Bill, 2010, that lays down guidelines for the practice of surrogacy, states that the birth certificate of a baby born out of rent-a-womb arrangement should be in the names of the intended parents, who would automatically become the new born's legal parents.

I hope issues like HIV/AIDS are being taken care, that is the reason Surrogacy needs to be properly monitored and regulated. India should not become a HUB for international disease.

The enactment of surrogacy should not lenient in India, it should be strict and followed strictly. The persons from other countries are using the women from India to save their money and to have a healthy baby also. So i think India should not become the hub for this. Another important point here is actually the intelligence of Indian people is more than that of the other countries. But the people are reluctant to accept it. By Indian surrogacy the intelligence is also going out without any credit.

Its a great help to couples having some medical problems.Generally every couple wishes to have a baby of their own,no one wishes to adopt this procedure unless in acute need. Just think the contribution of surrogate mother to all those in need, may be for some financial compensation, As Blood Donation is seems in a positive way this also should be given due respect in the same manner.

The above said proceedure are all ok. But, you have mentioned last paragraph that the draft Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) Regulation Bill, 2010, that lays down guidelines for the practice of surrogacy, states that the birth certificate of a baby born out of rent-a-womb arrangement should be in the names of the intended parents.

When the above mentioned ART bill developed and amendented in future and the this method would estatblish in big manner, will it be covered under rent-a-womb services under service tax.

      Please think.

My Friends have u seen the daily timetable of India, the rising prices of each commodity. Do u think a happy couple meaning, the husband goes to work and the woman sits home i mean as a housewife and the kid goes to school. A happy family cannot adjust to the living conditions of India rite now as because we have a corrupt democracy from top to bottom. All the prices are rising, so how will the lower class people survive. For example i donno in every state how or what name the cow's milk is distributed in milk packets, here in Kerala 500 ml of milk packet (Jersey) comes to 12.50 now the diary farms are in strike to raise the price. So when the strike is over the packet milk will come to 15 rupees. how do u think the middle class people will survive. Likewise in the commodities the prices differ, Den is this is crime woman doing surrogacy. Every parent thinks about the future of their children but here India is doomed. Another Example i can give u. All employees working in Government department, every month or every 6 month there salary is being hiked, and when there salary is hiked den the prices of all commodities hiked too. So imagine the lifestyle of middle class people. One day a day will come, our own Indians will kick out all the middle class people and they will reign India.

My friends as u said, adopting a child from an adoption center, its easy for u to say so but there are lots of formalities laid down by the Indian Government. All documents take lots of time, no easy paperwork in India. So this is the best way to adopt a child. Moreover by adopting a child all the money saved should be half to the adopted child. in addition to that, when the adopted child grows up he tends to go back to find his real identity, no matter if u keep it a secret somehow the child comes to know from his neighbors that he is an outcast. So he goes out to find out his real identity, again there the problem arises. Surrogate is now a better process in India, But of course there will be a future complaint on that because every child has a specific gene related to their mom, when this baby is separated from their mom, naturally problems will arise and doctors will have no treatment for that.

A womb may be rented for any reason(compelling or other) but the pain the mother experiences parting with her child after giving him/her life and showing light of the day can only be imagined.

poverty is the curse which incourage poor ladies to do things like that i am against surrogate pregnancy .
the couples need a child could get from a annath ashram .In the "world" lots of children does not have parents.
_ why people who want to have a child adopt those children?
_ it will be helpful in controlling the population of the world.
_ becoming surrogate mother is the abuse to being a lady and being a mother also.
_ leagal parents could not become the true parents.

      I think so...

There are lot of reasons to adopt a process of surrogate(Rent -a-womb) in india by poor ladies. So first of all there is need to understand the causes of adopting this deadly way of earning money . There is need to under the requirement of the power ladies. we have to provide them a secure job or work to earn livelihood. As we know that born a baby means second life. Question is that why our mothers and sisters choose this path. Its a question for we all Indians and we must to have find out the solution of this anti social myth.

There is proverb in English ,which says mother is true but father just an opinion. But with this everything
      will become opinion only.

Now India is ready to lend everything because of poverty and innocence. Get awareness of using people with least values. Now day this is the fate of indians. This is not an opposition of surrogacy. It is a divine thing to get a baby. These women should be praised to be a godliness. But some rich and powered persons gets chance to abuse them. Please give respect for women and the same time no women has the right to abuse her femininity.

A growing number of childless couples are seeking surrogacy. To meet the demand, a number of surrogate mothers have surfaced in fertility clinics around the country. Who are these women? And what are their reasons for lending their wombs? An intimate portrait of three surrogate mothers in Punjab. All of whom are Dalits.

I came across one such documentary "Was that My Baby Crying? "
      you may watch it online

Surrogacy is the curse for the humanity rather than gift.
