AITA TENNIS
Guwahati, June 8: Ramya Natrajan of Tamil Nadu bagged double crowns in the AITA championship series tennis tournament at the Chachal tennis complex here today.
Ramya, seeded sixth in the under-14 girls' singles category, shocked second seed Shubhi Dwivedi 6-1, 6-3 in the final.
The Tamil Nadu girl bagged her second title of the day after she upset third seed Arushi Bhasin of Delhi in a gruelling final of the under-18 girls' category. Ramya, a wild card entry in the category, came back from a set down to outplay her opponent 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The home crowd had little to cheer in the end as top seed Parikshit Somani went down to second seed Mingki Talom of Arunachal Pradesh 4-6, 3-6 in the under-14 boys' final.
In the girls' under-18 doubles final, the Delhi duo of Sumera Kamil and Arushi Bhasin, who are seeded third, got the better of the top seeds Suranjeta Saikia and Priyana Kalita of Assam 6-4, 6-4.
Wild card entry Allen Johnson Kundan of Kerala, however, conjured up the greatest upset of the day, defeating top seed Manish Kumar of Delhi 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a cliffhanger of the under-18 boys' final. Manish, who had upset Assam's Abhinanshu Borthakur 7-5, 6-2 in the semi-finals yesterday, could not match the Kerala lad in the deciding set today. The Delhi lad, along with Aditya Deswal, had lifted the under-18 boys' doubles title yesterday.
