Muzzafarnagar, Feb 24 (ANI): With Uttar Pradesh gearing up for the sixth phase of assembly polls, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Friday lashed out at his opponent parties for making false promises to garner votes.
Addressing a gathering here, Gandhi said: "You have been experiencing the regime of different parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP)- in the state for the past 22 years. They all make promises only."
Gandhi said the failure in implementing MNREGA, had forced people to migrate to other states to earn their living.
"The strength that Uttar Pradesh has, no other state has. . The youth of the state are migrating to other states in search of jobs. And if you want employment, you have to migrate to other states, because employment is not available for the youth in Uttar Pradesh," he added.
Gandhi also slammed regional Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav for failing to address the problem of electricity in the state since 22 years.
"He was the Chief Minister for three terms. What did he do for them? When people of drought-hit Bundelkhand were crying for help where was he? I had gone to different villages in the region. I could see neither Mulayamji nor Chief Minister Mayawati there. Mayawatiji was the Chief Minister, but never visited Bundelkhand," Gandhi said.
Gandhi's campaign efforts have seen him try to influence potential voters of a stronger mandate than the one in 2007, where the Congress secured just 22 seats in a 403-strong assembly.
The Uttar Pradesh polls are being viewed as an opportunity for major political parties to re-establish their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state. new 403-member state assembly will be elected in March. The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
