    R-Day alert along border

Shillong, Jan. 24: Meghalaya police have sounded an alert in the border areas especially in various police outposts along the border to prevent militants sneaking into the state and also into neighbouring Assam.

Along with the other militant outfits in the Northeast, the Khasi hills-based Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has also called a bandh on Republic Day.

"We are constantly reviewing the situation and we have also alerted the BSF to be on vigil on the borders to thwart the attempt of any subversive elements to sneak into Meghalaya," the director-general of police, Meghalaya, N. Ramachandran, said.

Because of its proximity to both Bangladesh and , the Garo hills have become a focus of attention for the police as there are chances hat militants belonging to Ulfa and NDFB can sneak into Assam through the porous border in Garo hills.

According to Ramachandran, though there are no specific inputs about the entry of militants from Bangladesh, security has been beefed up throughout the state to ensure peaceful Republic Day celebrations.

"At the moment we do not have any specific input on the entry of militants to the state, but danger is always there. We have alerted the police outposts along the state's border and also other police stations. The BSF has also been alerted," Ramachandran said.

He said no additional police forces would be deployed in the state as the existing police force, together with the CRPF, would be able to tackle any situation.

The Garo hills-based GNLA has not called a boycott of Republic Day.

Besides the main Republic Day function at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, Polo, Meghalaya Raj Bhavan will also be open to the public on Thursday.
