Margao: Pune FC held onto Arata Izumi's first-half strike to win 1-0 over table-topper Dempo in the 19th round I-League match here on Sunday.
Pune FC, which lost to Sporting Clube de Goa in their last round, had a different plan against Dempo.
They played a defensive game and then launched a quick counter move in which they succeeded and found the net in the 20th minute through Izumi header off a cross from Baldeep Singh.
Pune FC's Amrinder Singh also put up a good display under the bar, especially in the dying minutes, to give his team full points and take them to sixth place with 31 points from 19 matches.
Dempo suffered defeat after remaining unbeaten in the last five matches. They now have 40 points from 19 matches.
In Pune, Air India defeated HAL 2-1 to consolidate its position in the standings after both the teams put up a great show at the Balewadi Sports Complex on Sunday. Sporting Clube de Goa defeated Chirag United Kerala 3-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi.
