Chennai May 28 (PTI) Asserting that the Hogenakkal drinking water project had not been put in cold storage as alleged by some opposition parties, including AIADMK, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said the schedule for commencement of the project work would be strictly followed. "We have to finalise the project management consultant (PMC) before July 2008 as per the schedule.

In February itself, we have called for tenders and last date for receiving the tenders was March," he said in a statement here. The work was progressing as per schedule and there was no need to write to the Centre or Karnataka now, as demanded by some, he said.

Karunanidhi had put the project on hold after protests erupted in Karnataka following objections by the BJP and others. The PMC would go through the detailed project report and bid documents before the end of October and tenders would be floated for the project by December, he said adding tenders would be finalised by March 2009 and the project would be completed as per schedule in December 2012.

He said he had only put the scheme on hold till Karnataka assembly polls as he did not want any violence, which would vitiate the atmosphere in the poll-bound state. The BJP's Tamil Nadu unit president L Ganesan had said that there was no need to get permission from Karnataka to implement the project, said Karunanidhi.
