Fresh aftershocks in quake-hit areas in China

Raghavendra Beijing, May 18 (PTI) China was going all out in its desperate search for survivors six days after the most devastating temblor in three decades left nearly 29,000 people dead as new aftershocks hit and a barrier lake burst in the quake-shattered southwest region. In continuing miracle rescues, a man was pulled out alive only with slight bruises from the rubble of a collapsed hospital building, 139 hours after the quake in Beichuan county, official Xinhua news agency said.

The first 72 hours after the quake offer the best chance of rescue but President Hu Jintao has told emergency workers in the disaster zone not to give up efforts to find survivors, saying, "Saving lives remains the top priority of our work." The confirmed death toll in Monday's 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Sichuan province and other areas has neared 29,000 amidst fears that it would rise further with thousands of people still buried under the debris of collapsed buildings.

Rescuers should go all out and leave "no dead angle or blind spot" while looking for the victims, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao told a meeting of the general headquarters of quake relief under the State Council or the cabinet. A barrier lake formed in the upper reaches after Jianjiang river in Pengzhou city was blocked by landslides triggered by the earthquake has breached but without causing any casualties as authorities had evacuated residents in the downstream, Xinhua said.
