Rezaul H Laskar Islamabad, May 16 (PTI) Differences within Pakistan's ruling coalition widened today over a controversial gubernatorial appointment in Punjab province, with PML-N asking PPP to review the decision and warning that their alliance would be in danger if it took more such unilateral steps. Acting on the advice of the Pakistan People's Party-led federal government, President Pervez Musharraf yesterday appointed industrialist and media baron Salman Taseer as the new governor of the politically crucial province of Punjab.
The PML-N, which is ruling Punjab, said it was not consulted on the move. Describing Taseer as a "controversial figure", the party said his appointment was part of a conspiracy hatched by Musharraf to initiate horse-trading in the province.
Senior PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal asked the PPP to review its decision "to keep coalition intact". Party spokesman Siddique-ul Farooq warned: "If they (PPP) take further steps like that, the coalition will be in danger.
" PML-N leaders boycotted Taseer's swearing-in ceremony in Lahore this evening, which was attended by a large number of PPP workers who shouted slogans in support of their party and its slain chairperson Benazir Bhutto. Taseer, who has close links with both the PPP and Musharraf's camp, said he was the PPP-led central government's representative in Punjab but members of all parties would be equal for him.
