368 LTTE militants, 41 soldiers killed in clashes in May: Army

T V Sriram Colombo, May 14 (PTI) Fierce clashes between the LTTE militants and the Sri Lankan security forces have killed 368 Tamil tiger rebels and 41 army personnel this month, the army said here today. "As many as 368 LTTE militants have been killed and 438 injured during clashes between May 1-14," a defence ministry spokesman said.

The spokesman said 41 soldiers have been killed and 155 wounded during clashes with the militants till now this month. A total of 14 civilians lost their lives and 39 suffered injuries as a result of the clashes during the period under review, the official said.

The official charged the LTTE with forceful recruitment of school dropouts in the rebel stronghold of Wanni. He said the students who could not clear their senior school level exams in Killinochchi and Mullaitivu were not allowed to re-appear and were forced to join the LTTE. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Air Force fighter jets today pounded a LTTE training base in the tiger stronghold in northern part of the island nation.

"Air Force fighter jets bombed a key LTTE training facility located at Kollanvillu, 4 Km South of Mulankavil in the Kilinochchi district this morning," the Air Force officials said. The target was effectively acquired, they said.

In ground clashes, one militant was killed in Eluthumaduwai area in Jaffna yesterday and others were gunned down in Chinnavalavankaddu in Vavuniya on the same day, the defence ministry said. PTI.
