Stray incidents of violence during WB panchayat polls

Kolkata, May 14 (PTI) A bomb was today hurled at the presiding officer of a polling booth in Howrah district during the second phase of panchayat polls in West Bengal, leaving him injured. Voting was suspended for an hour and three persons were arrested in connection with the attack, Superintendent of Police Neeraj Kumar Singh said.

Some stray incidents were also reported from Nasibpur and Amta 11 block in the district, official sources said. A report from Nadia district said a person suffered head injuries when Trinamool Congress supporters clashed with CPI(M) supporters at a polling booth at Haringhata.

On a complaint from state minister Bankim Ghosh about some drunk Trinamool Congress supporters allegedly disturbing voters at Mitrapur Mollah Belia area in Haringhata, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. District Magistrate Omkar Singh Meena said two persons were arrested while making bombs at Shantipur Gobrachar area.

Voters in large numbers were seen in front of booths at Singur, where the Tata Motors small car plant is located. The second phase of panchayat polls is being held in Howrah, Nadia, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas districts today.
