Bangalore, May 14 (PTI) After deploying its Vokkaliga strongman S M Krishna to lead the party in the assembly elections in poll-bound Karnataka, Congress today projected his government's achievements between 1999-2004 to attract the electorate ahead of the second and third phase of polls. "The Congress government in Karnataka under the chief ministership of Krishna achieved a significant increase in tax and non-tax revenues through rationalisation of tax structure," Union Minister and Congress spokesman Kapil Sibal said at a press conference here.
Releasing data in this regard, he said revenues of the state increased from Rs 11230.44 crore in 1998-99 to Rs 21,731.84 crore in 2003-04. Sibal said due to higher revenue, the spending on social sectors increased.
It was the Krishna government which launched the mid-day meal scheme. Refuting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's claims that BJP government had transformed the state into a developed one, Sibal said Karnataka was far ahead in various sectors, including education.
While Karnataka ranked No 2 with about 120 engineering colleges, after Maharashtra, Gujarat had only 43, he said. As against 41 medical colleges in Gujarat, Karnataka has 172, he said.
"Karnataka does not want the Gujarat model", he said. The second phase will be held on May 16 and the third on May 22.
