Student ID cards in Karnataka may be misused in polls: EC

Mon, May 12 06:01 PM

New Delhi, May 12 (PTI) The Election Commission today directed the poll authorities to issue a "general alert" on the possible misuse of student identity cards during the remaining two phases of assembly polls in Karnataka. "It has been brought to the notice of the Commission that in some places attempts are being made to issue identification cards to the students in a hurry perhaps with back date by many educational institutions," the EC said in a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state.

There was an apprehension that such cards might be issued without proper care in the "last moment and this may give scope for misuse," it said. "A general alert may be sent to all District Election Officers and Returning Officers about the possibility of such identification documents being misused on the poll day," the EC said.

The Commission directed that in case of any such misuse, severe action should be taken not only against such 'voter' but also against the institutions which issued such identity cards, it added. PTI.
