Bangalore, May 10 (PTI) As the first phase of Assembly polls in Karnataka is underway, major political parties -- Congress, BJP and JDS -- appeared confident of forming government on their own in the southern state. Senior Congress leader S M Krishna, who quit as Maharasthra Governor to lead the party in the polls, said his party will get a simple majority.

"Congress is sure to get a simple majority as voters are in favour of my party as they are disappointed with coalition government performance," the tech-savvy Congress leader told reporters after casting his vote in his home town Maddur. "According to reports I have received, Congress will win more than 45 seats out of 89 going to elections in the first phase today," he said.

Asked whether there was any special reason for Congress to field women candidates against Gowda brothers, the former Chief Minister said: "They are also candidates. Whether it is male or female.

They are serious candidates from a very respectable background." "People are sore over the performance of JDS-BJP coalition government during whose regime corruption was rampant.

It will be a single party rule by Congress. People have decided to support Congress," he claimed.

BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu said he was confident of his party getting a comfortable majority and he could understand that there is a "positive mood towards" the party. "Bangalore is very important for winning the elections.

If you win Bangalore, your victory is assured. And now with the city has increased number of assembly seats, we are positive towards the results," the BJP leader said.
