Zardari, Sharif meet to sort out issue of judges' restoration

London, May 9 (PTI) Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif met here today to thrash out the vexed issue of the restoration of judges that has threatened to break up their coalition. The meeting was preceded by discussion among leaders of the PML-N and PPP separately.

Nawaz Sharif, brother Shahbaz Sharif and other senior leaders including Khawaja Asif, Ishaq Dar, Ghaus Ali Shah and Begum Tehmina Daultana first met at Sharif's apartment in the Mayfair to ponder over the issue after the failure of the legal committee to come up with a consensus resolution. The resolution is to be presented before the National Assembly on May 12 for the restoration of the judges.

Zardari and Sharif earlier held talks in Dubai over the reinstatement of more than 60 superior court judges who were sacked by President Pervez Musharraf after he imposed emergency in the country on November 3. Sharif has said the deposed judges will be reinstated on May 12 after the National Assembly or lower house of parliament passes a resolution for their restoration.

However, Zardari has not committed himself to this deadline. Shahbaz Sharif earlier told the ARY television network that resolution of the issue was imperative so that the government could focus its attention to solving other problems "inherited" from the past regime.

According to him, some elements were busy hatching "conspiracies" against the successful functioning of the coalition government but their efforts would fail. "We are putting the mechanisms in place to resolve the differences and our opponents would be disappointed.
