Sensex up 74 pts in early trade

Mumbai, Apr 24 (PTI) After a brief pause yesterday, firm global cues helped the markets recover smartly today and pushed up the benchmark Sensex by 74 points at 1030 hours as investors squared off positions at the concluding session of derivative series. The 30-share index of the Bombay Stock Exchange was quoted at 16,771.91 at 1030 hours, up 73.87 points from its previous close of 16,698.04.

The Sensex had risen to a high of 16,844.02 in the first 10 minutes of trade. The broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also rose by 12.55 points to 5,035.35 at 1030 hours from its last close of 5,022.80.

The market is driven by strong global cues, particularly a firm trend in Asian markets this morning, brokers said. The market, however, witnessed profit booking at every rally for the past three days, they added.
