Potters in Tripura doing brisk Diwali business

Nadan Nagar, Oct 20 (ANI): Business for potters in Tripura is on the rise as the upcoming festival of Diwali has led to a surge in the demand for pottery items and earthen lamps.

Potters involved in the making of diyas are working extra hard these days with the whole family getting occupied in making these lamps to meet the orders.

"During the festival season, our work load increases, as demand for earthen lamp rises. We mainly make earthen pots and lamps," Sabitri Rudra Paul, a potter.

"The demand for these things is more during the festival season and our whole family gets involved to complete the order, so that we can fulfill the market demand, but it becomes very tough to complete the work on time," she added.

Potters also said that people these days opted for less cumbersome and more glitzy plastic and electric lamps, the importance of 'diyas' could not be undermined as they were very much in demand.

"With the introduction of plastic made decorative items in the market, the demand for earthen lamps and pots had gone down and our business was badly affected. But this year, the demands for the earthen lamps have again risen, as Diwali is approaching," said Hari Rudra Paul, another potter.

"If we could get some training and loan from the government, then our business will rejuvenate and we could construct a shed, where we can continue with our work during the monsoon season," he added.

Available in various designs, the price of earthen lamps ranges from one to a few hundred rupees, depending upon the size, style and embellishments(ANI)
