BEIJING (Reuters) - The most devastating earthquake to hit China in three decades has killed up to 5,000 people and left as many as 10,000 injured, toppling eight schools and at least one hospital, state media said.

CHENGDU, China (Reuters) - Nearly 10,000 people were killed by the earthquake that hammered southwest China, officials said on Tuesday as rescuers struggled to reach the worst-hit areas where many more may have died.
WITHIN HOURS, the official death toll from a massive earthquake that shook China on Monday afternoon shot up from four to 107 to 'several thousands'. At the time of going to press, more than 9,000 people were feared dead in the earthquake - the worst in China in over three decades.
