Over 60 percent polling in UP second phase

Lucknow: The second phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh Saturday saw an estimated voting of over 60 percent, an election official here said.

Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha told IANS that the percentage was between 60-61 percent.

Bright and sunny weather saw a large turnout at polling booths in Uttar Pradesh Saturday where balloting is being held in 59 constituencies spread across nine districts in the second phase of the staggered assembly elections.

Different political parties seem to view the impressive turnout from their respective angles.

The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) that in 2007 bagged as many as 30 of the 59 seats falling in this area, claimed it as an indication of a major swing in its favour. "I am quite confident that our party will retain all of 30 seats we had won last time," claimed a key BSP functionary.

However, the Congress sees the high turnout of youth as a reflection of the surge for Rahul Gandhi, while Samajwadi Party was ready to give itself a substantial jump from its last tally of six. "All the anti-incumbency votes against Mayawati will come to us," claimed SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary, who seemed confident of the tables being turned against BSP.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Gorakhpur felt that the party would definitely make a significant gain. "It would be in BJP's political interest not to align with any political party," said Yogi Adityanath, the party's saffron-clad Lok Sabha MP from Gorakhpur.

As many as 1.97 crore voters are to decide the fate of 1,098 candidates in the fray for the second phase polling for 59 of UP's 403 state assembly seats. Other than Gorakhpur, the districts going to poll today are Azamgarh, Ballia, Ghazipur, Maharajganj, Deoria, Mau, Sant Kabir Nagar and Kushinagar, where 20,426 polling stations with some 20,800 electronic voting machines (EVM) were in place.

The phase is crucial for the ruling BSP, which had bagged as many as 30 of the 59 seats at the last state assembly election in 2007. While Samajwadi Party (SP) won 21 seats, BJP got six 6 and Congress trailed last with two seats here.

A number of prominent leaders including 30 sitting MLAs and 21 former ministers are in fray. Prominent among those whose prestige was at stake were UP Assembly speaker Sukhdeo Rajbhar, BJP state president Surya Pratap Shahi, BSP state chief Swami Prasad Maurya, dreaded mafia don-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari as well as Peace Party president Dr. Ayub.

Significantly, SP has fielded Aman Mani Tripathi, the son of jailed mafia don-turned- politician Amarmani Tripathi, who stood convicted for the murder of Hindi poetess Madhumita Shukla, his girlfriend.

A police force of over 120,000 cops, including about 55,000 central para-military personnel and 10,000 personnel of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), is in place to maintain strict vigil in the crime-prone, communally-sensitive and poverty-ridden vast expanse of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The UP voters have full faith on CM bahen Mayawati ji, as she has worked hard to take UP again on the path of progress & development, with social harmony, education and improved law & order, that other political parties were not able to do in past 60 years.

our best wishes are always with her and may God help her in her noble vision of 'sarvjan-hitay' aimed at bringing respect and dignity to everyone in UP..

This poll turnout is moderately very good, and surely it is a great pleasure that the UP people have finally used their wisdom and voted heavily to pave paths to a clear majority to our most beloved and respected CM Mayawati ji, who is determined to make UP a crime free peaceful & developing 'Model State' .

and in next 5 years BSP plans to implement many development projects benefiting both the urban and the rural population and the growth rate could well go beyond 9% GDP ensuring UP becomes most productive and developed State in India... it is a noble journey of this great visionary CM Mayawati ji to bring pride and respect in UP people back again.

I feel satisfaction on polling going peaceful & dispute free in U.P.This means that people of U.P are not following criminial & goonda elements this time. However which party will benefit from 60% polling, can not be judged while sitting on net.Only reports from ground will confirm which way people are turning out.

        @ Sarbjit,Yes,In 2007,it was 43.41% only.

Congress is dreaming about the seats. If people of UP is going to elect congress that means they like Corruption. But not the development of the state. At least the CM is making public gardens those are for the public not for the CM. If she is putting elephants people can oppose but not for those gardens.
What congress is did either gardens nor public toilets built ?
If people of India trusted this time they may sell India to any nations. They may be ban your progress of every individual.

Elections pass defeating the democracy. Why only sixty percentage of the people cast votes alone?May the other forty thought, they are not fit to vote.A party that can secure only thirty or thirty one can come in power. Our elections pass like celebrations without getting the participation from all.
    • Shasanka  •  3 months ago
Only 60% voters casted their vote, No one stopped another 40 % voters to come for casting their vote. India has come across a long way, 62 years. By now, every voter is well aware. Still it is not justified to blame Govt machinery for such voter turn out. We all have some responsibility. Besides all other exceptions, i.e. non availability of EPIC, local violence, etc. around 80 to 85% turnout is expected. We all must think, what is more important, whether to take part in this election process or to refrain from!

@ Shasanka,In 2007,it was 43.41%.This is result of improved law and order in UP because of which voters came to vote without any fear.

Shri Respected Beni Pd. Varma ji deserves congratulations for admitting great tolerance for outsiders like Punjabee Punia ji by the hindi-speaking cow-looking people from UP Bihar Rajasthan MP etc who are not accepted in maharashtra, Punjab/delhi, Assam etc for jobs, political leadership, business or even for selling vegetables, milk.

I appeal to the people of UP to vote in large number so that on third phase onwards, polling becomes at least 80% or more. In Kerala or West Bengal, we find that vote casting becomes even 90%. Being largest State of India, people of UP have a special responsibility towards democracy to flourish and Indian democracy will be successful only when north Indian States particularly UP people vote in large number to the extent of 80 to 90% . Best wishes to the people of UP.

A candidate with 30% of the total votes will be a big winner with a permit to play with the various institutions of the democracy. What a democracy ? Polling figure of 60% is being termed as heavy turn out. Where are the remaining voters ? Perhaps on duty[ ? ] or in search of bread elsewhere. Hungry people{in any manner} can not even draft a democracy what to talk of crafting a strong democracy. The so called leaders claim that the Indian democracy has striven to thrive but I feel it has merely survived.

Has anybody asked why only 60 % turned out . Was it due to fear or they did not get their voter ids ?? What was the reason . this drawback in providing the voter ids has been prolonging every election in many states . why all people are not able to get voter ids ????? Is it not their right ??? And the duty of the govt ????

@KRS,Don't show your ignorance here.In 2007, the voting was 43.41%.This time it is 36% higher.

Election Commission officials said the second phase was "very good polling" as voting had taken place even in the "traditional low voting areas".
In 2007 it was 43.41%,this time it is 36% more.
    • AP  •  3 months ago
It should have been more than 80%. Only then, winner would have been clear reflection of People's choice. No single community would overshadow on the overall political prospect of any particular party and only summation would reflect.
