Guwahati, Feb. 7: The CBI today arrested a senior official of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Purna Kanta Bora, from his office at Sivasagar for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 from a contractor.
"The accused, who is the general manager, civil (engineering services) of ONGC's Assam Asset, was caught red-handed by a team of CBI officials in the presence of an independent witness this afternoon," a CBI source said.
Acting on the basis of a complaint lodged by the contractor, the CBI laid a trap and arrested Bora while he was accepting the bribe.
The CBI has registered a case (number 5/2012) under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act at its anti-corruption branch in Guwahati.
The source said the name of the complainant was in the list of contractors empanelled by the ONGC for allotment of works in the current fiscal.
"According to the contractor, during a meeting, Bora categorically told him that he would have to bribe him if he wanted to bag a contract with the ONGC," the source said.
"We registered a case and sent our team to Sivasagar," he said.
Interrogation of the ONGC executive is on and searches are being conducted at Bora's official quarters at Sivasagar and private residences in Jorhat and Guwahati.
The accused is likely to be brought to Guwahati tomorrow for his production before the court of special CBI judge.
