Sergei Martynov Biography

Martynov has appeared in five Olympics but has never finished higher than third. That could change at these Games, as Martynov won his second world title in 2010 and produced a streak of four consecutive World Cup victories in the 50-meter, prone position event. He had that run snapped in May. After his most recent Olympic appearance in 2008, Martynov added two more World Cup finals wins in 2010 and 2011. He's finished first six times in that competition but has only won bronze medals at the Olympics, those coming in 2000 and 2004 before he finished eighth in Beijing. He made his first Olympic appearance in 1988 for the Soviet Union in the 10-meter air rifle, coming in 14th, and the Barcelona Games are the only Olympics he hasn't competed in since then. Martynov has shot a perfect 600 in qualifying rounds a record six times during his lengthy career, and the most recent of those performances came during his 2010 World Cup finals victory.
