Jorhat, Jan. 17: Oil India Ltd has taken up a unique project to translate the literary works of eminent writers and thinkers of Assam into Hindi and distribute them in various parts of the country, to bring the people of the country closer to the literature of Assam.
K.K. Nath, resident chief executive, OIL, at the inaugural function of the golden jubilee celebration of Duliajan Sahitya Sabha at Bihutoli, Dibrugarh district, today said Nagen Saikia, writer and parliamentarian, had contributed much to the literature of Assam.
To start with, OIL has facilitated the translation of one of his short story collections, Swa Nirvachit Galpa, into Hindi and is in the process of publishing the collection for distribution.
Nath added that this initiative had been taken at the behest of the chairman and managing director of OIL, S.K. Srivastava.
Srivastava had personally mooted the idea and was keen to see that the literary works of the region should be read by people in other parts of the country as well.
He praised the Duliajan Sahitya Sabha for its services towards the promotion and development of the Assamese literature.
He said as envisioned by Srivastava, OIL will also take up translation of the works of other eminent writers of the region into Hindi and publish them so that lovers of books and literature throughout the country would get an insight into these.
"Through this literature they will come to know the place, its customs and other practices. This will help form an understanding of the people of the region as well," he said.
