    Obama hails India's economic reforms

New Delhi, Nov 8 (IANS) American President Barack Obama Monday hailed India for proving sceptics wrong by surmounting overwhelming odds post-independence and becoming a model to the world.

Obama also underlined that India built itself on sturdy foundations of ancient civilisation of science and innovation besides a fundamental faith in human progress since its independence in 1947.

'And despite the sceptics who said that this country was simply too poor, too vast, too diverse to succeed, you surmounted overwhelming odds and became a model to the world,' he said during his address to MPs from both houses of parliament.

Appreciating New Delhi's efforts to reform its economy in 1991, he said: 'Instead of resisting the global economy, you became one of its engines - reforming the licensing raj and unleashing an economic marvel that has lifted tens of millions from poverty and created one of the world's largest middle classes.'

The US president also hailed India's progress and development.

'In your lives, you have overcome odds that might have overwhelmed a lesser country. In just decades, you have achieved progress and development that took other nations centuries,' he added.

'And now you are assuming your rightful place as a leader among nations. Your parents and grandparents imagined this. Your children and grandchildren will look back on this. But only you - this generation of Indians - can seize the possibility of this moment,' Obama said.

During his 45-minute address, Obama also spoke of the success of green revolution of the 1960s.

'Instead of slipping into starvation, you launched a green revolution that fed millions. Instead of becoming dependent on commodities and exports, you invested in science and technology and in your greatest resource - the Indian people. And the world sees the results, from the supercomputers you build to the Indian flag that you put on the moon,' he said.

Lauding India's unique unity in diversity, he said: 'Instead of succumbing to division, you have shown that the strength of India - the very idea of India - is its embrace of all colours, castes and creeds. It's the diversity represented in this chamber today.'

Yes I share my views with President Obama about the progress India has made despite
alarming corruption amongst most of our politicians.Alas! our politicians could realise this
fact. Why don't they understand the established fact that every materialistic thing will
remain here after they breath their last. They will only be remembered as the most corrupt
      persons on the earth
The only desire of my life is to see India at the top which is only possible if all
corrupt politicians are put behind the bars.
WILL IT HAPPEN DURING OUR LIFE?

the so called progress is on books for politicians, corporates ,bureaucrats,75% of the pupulation is grinding under the load of high corruption/taxes and inflation .scams are brushed aside just by appointing inquiry committiees or refering to departmental agencies,a tool of politicians to supress the truth.corporates are openly comittuing dacoity by reducing quantity/quality/hoarding/monopolising and offering tons of funds to politicians for protection. small small children committing meagre theftor like crime are lodged in jails w/o trial and languish in custodies malnutiioned as slaves resulting in unnecessary burden on so called aam admi.whilst sharks robbing the public at large go scot free.under govt. shadow.

Obama has not seen Old Delhi . had he then his speech will be different. It will be about india's dying illiterates, fake goods, and robbers. millions in poverty. the sardar who make fake goods in chandni chowk.
the speech is loaded with euphemisms and metaphorically describes our integration into global workforce.
the truth is we had no option in economic reofrms. it was either join the global economy and get BPO business from USA or else face sanctions in future on nuclear power etc.
This specch is a political farce..

A speech with intent and courage to show the world the future prospects of India. Its poor people will in course of time recognise the essence of President Obama's speech. It is our Intelligensia, Politicians to wake up and to surrender their ill gotten wealth and ideas to the suffering people of our Country. We shall be a strong Nation. Journalist, Media, Judiciary must come forward to support this cause and future prospects of India. My India.

while commenting on indian youth one should rectify their own problems ....
if all indian youth combine and work for development of indian economy i mean every indian who had respect and courage, patriot on the nation they should take oath to wok in india... this is my sincere request to all the indians and chainees who are working in usa ... and the real thing is all the people who are willing to work in foreign countries should change their views and if all the uncorrupted youth and management graduates come and rule in local governments and become the leaders ..... no doubt india will soon achieve it's target....

Yes, I appreciate what President Obama said about India, but do we indians really deserve this? It's a matter of self analysis. Its time to reflect seriously whether do we behave as indians or still there are a lot of other matters which prevent us being real indians behind the mask of religions, cast and cultures. If we don't put away all these differences in a second level which, off course, make the beauty of indian culture and make India unique in the world, joining under the three color flag and march forward fighting the injustice, corruption, fanaticism and poverty, only then we can be proud of being indians. And the first step on the front line should be made by the people whom we have chosen to be our guide, the politicians, and behind them all people without difference of religion, caste, language, culture, rich and poor. Only then we can say we are on the right way.
