Nuclear Power Corp transfers engineers from Kudankulam

Chennai, Jan 9 (IANS) In order to put into productive use its engineers at the stalled Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP), the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) has started transferring them to other upcoming projects in India, an official Monday.

'It has been three months since the work at the 2,000 MW power project came to a standstill. So some engineers have been transferred to the upcoming power projects at Kakrapar (Gujarat) and Rajasthan,' a senior NPCIL official told IANS on condition of anonymity.

NPCIL is building two 700 MW atomic power plants in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

He said around 12 officials belonging to mechanical, civil and fuel disciplines have been transferred from KNPP.

India's nuclear power plant operator NPCIL is building two 1,000 MW atomic power reactors at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli, around 650 km from Chennai, at an outlay of Rs.13,171 crore.

The first unit was slated to be commissioned in December. However, villagers, citing fears for their lives and safety, brought all the project-related activities to a standstill.

'The district administration monitors the number of people who enter the project site. They do not allow more than 100 officials in a day. We are sending people on rotation so that they do not lose their morale,' the NPCIL official said.

He said the condition of the coolant water in the first reactor is being monitored and water chemistry maintained.

'The coolant water is being circulated so that the equipments do not rust,' he added.

NPCIL has around 850 employees at KNPP. Queried about the 120 Russian engineers working at the KNPP, he said: 'Some have gone on year-end vacation and they are expected back.'

The People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), which is spearheading the protest against the project, Monday wrote to the three women chief ministers in India - J. Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu, Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh and Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal.

It asked them 'to take steps to rescind all the nuclear agreements that the central government has signed with the US, Russia, France and many countries around the world'.

This kind of outrageous anti-national action can only takes place in India. A state of the art Nuclear Power Plant which can serve the dire need of electricity for three of four states is being held hostage by a handful of outlaws. tTese few people are being financially helped by vested interested to conduct agitation against commissioning of this vital Power Plant. Had this been happened in any other country, by this time those agitators would have been put in slammer in such a way that they will never see the sun light again. For our politicians, self interest before national interest. Every Indian should lower their head for this shameful action.

These protestors are silly people. Indeed do we have an alternate source of energy ? If we talk about risk, there is risk to life every moment. Some people are talking about the area being Tsunami prone. Other areas which are not could be affected by earthquake or other natural calamity. Who thought Bhopal tragedy shall happen. But does it mean that you will not have any more Chemical plants.
Can we live without power and if not then can our vast population and domestic, industrial and agricultural need for power be met by any other source ?
Some silly people are out to destroy this country with their silly believe.

Do the protestors have any alternative in the energy requirements. For that matter people like, Medha Patkar, protesting against dam construction have any alternative. You again protest if supply is not available. Ex: Recent Protests in Kashmir.
Best way to deal with these protestors is to cut of the supply to their household. Let them live without supply and show the way to live without Supply.

Sure it is unfortunate when thousands die due to the profit of few like the Bhopal gas tragedy and Latur earth quake victims where all was well until disaster struck and no help from anyone ( In India) . Better nuclear plant is located withing the presidents house which is lying useless till date ...

The technology supplying countries like Japan, US, France and Russia are not relying on their technology and they stopped building new plants and they even stopped the existing plants, but they are supplying the same technology to India. Why we should use this un-reliable technology, and if some thing catastrophe happens like sunami or earth quake and if it results in atomic radiation and leading to death of lakhs of innocent people , how we can stop it, really do we have technology and expertise. Japan having all these failed to stop destruction with the help of mighty US it's not possible, for India only god can save.

        Dear MR.Harinath
it seems you have visited and saw everything and you are a expert... go to AREVA in France and see their latest technology from them, countries which are shutting down nuclear plants are doing so because there life span is over ... normally its around 35 to 40 years after that it has to be dismantled .. don't loose words as if you are expert.. if you are against nuclear power start it from your home.. where ever you go in the world , don't use power derived from nuclear energy...Kudankulam is on the lines of one of the safest reactors in the world...even a jumbo jet crash will not amount to radiation leak... help support the nation.. don't joint hands with political parties for short term political gains.. if you think it's a risk ,then everything what Man kind does is also a risk...
