NRI computer operator shot at, robbed in inter-state bus

New Delhi, Oct. 9 -- A 29-year-old Non-Resident Indian (NRI) was shot at by a gang of armed assailants when he resisted their robbery attempt. The incident took place aboard a private inter-state bus in east Delhi early on Monday morning, police said.

Babu Khan, who hails from a village in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, and works as a computer operator at a restaurant in Dubai, had boarded the bus at Jyoti Nagar's Loni roundabout with his relatives when five armed assailants barged into it around 5am.

"The bus driver was at a tea stall and there was just one other passenger, when five armed men entered the bus," said an officer.

"When Khan tried to resist them, he was shot in the thigh by one of the men. The rest of the gang members then took away his luggage and escaped," the officer said. Police said they took away Rs. 37,000 in cash, a laptop, a mobile phone and eight tolas of gold jewellery.

Khan's relatives, who were standing outside the bus when the incident unfolded, rushed him to the Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital. A case has been registered at the Jyoti Nagar Police Station.
